Widney U3A Recorder Consort
The group now meets on 1st and 4th Friday (9.30 - 10.30 am) in members houses.
Solihull Widney U3A was formed in 2006 and we began as a group of six teaching ourselves to play treble recorders which by 2009 have developed into a full blown Recorder Consort with descant, treble, tenor and bass recorder playing together.
Two more players joined us and in May 2009 we presented our first public performance, outside U3A Core Meetings, giving a concert of 40 minutes for which we were paid!! We were delighted to receive very favourable comments from the audience. Since then we have presented 2 or 3 concerts each year.
We really enjoy our rehearsals playing a wide variety of music and have lots of laughs! We became so popular that one person joined Widney U3A just to be in the Consort, two players from other U3A's joined us and I was having to turn people away because we couldn't fit into people’s lounges with all our stands and other paraphernalia!
However, sadly 3 people moved away from Solihull, another left through over commitment, two died and our bass player has not attended since October 2015, which left only four players - when everyone is there - which is not really enough to play some of our part music. The four of us are very keen to continue and one new player joined 2 weeks ago so there seems to be hope on the horizon. However we are desperately seeking some new recorder players.
If you played the recorder at school and might like to give us a try, PLEASE come and see me (details in membership card)
The U3A Consort at Deerhurst Court
on 29th November 2016, along with Solihull U3A Handbell Ringers, we entertained the residents of Deerhurst Court with a programme ranging from Tudor Music to more recent pieces such as ‘Moon River’ by Henry Mancini and ‘Walking in the Air’ from The Snowman by Blake. Incidentally I discovered that Moon River is a real river in Ontario, Canada.
Our performance was well received and we gave the donation presented to us to the Air Ambulance.
Then in January 2017 we went to the Solihull Methodist Guild Supper, which was excellent, and provided the Entertainment for them afterwards using the same programme of music as above.
We were pleased to welcome Irene Page back to help us out as two of our regular members couldn’t make it.
The group received a great many thanks and compliments afterwards and also at Church on the following Sunday.
Recorder Group Play-In
"This morning (1st July 2017) Widney U3A Consort had a 'Play-In' with Silhill U3A Recorder Group
Each group chose some pieces which we rehearsed beforehand and it all went really well.
They play descant recorders apart from Diane, their leader, who has a bass and we played the treble and tenor parts. We played a variety of music including several folk songs, two James Hook pieces, a Tudor dance and a Handel March.
We all enjoyed the morning and hope to have another Play-In again soon."
