We are the STANFORD-LE-HOPE and DISTRICT u3a.

An Introductory Meeting was arranged on 12th February 2014 at the "Welcome Club" in Stanford-le-Hope. At this well attended meeting, volunteers were requested to form a steering group and organise an inaugural meeting.

The Inaugural Meeting was held on the 8th May 2014 at the "The Springhouse", Corringham and over 200 people attended with around 75% joining up on the day.

The Stanford le Hope and District u3a is a registered charity run by its members for its members, by pooling and sharing members’ skills, abilities and time. The STANFORD-LE-HOPE and DISTRICT u3a is an excellent resource for retired people in the local area and as a member you can have a major influence on what is provided and how this u3a is run.

We produce a monthly newsletter with information about our groups. It is available as a hard copy at General meetings or viewable online. You can view current and past newsletters here. News

In November 2015 we achieved Charity status. Registered Charity Number 1164247.

We currently have a modest number of Interest Groups running, but this is continuing to expand to cover a wide and varied range of interests. All our groups meet in members’ homes or local halls as appropriate.

A General Meeting is held on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at

Admittance to the General Meetings is by membership card only (insurance reasons) If you forget your card you will need to sign in with the Membership Secretary.
Please also note we have a practice to prevent MOBILE PHONES sounding during our meetings. This is both disruptive and distracting to the person speaking to us and to other members close by. We would prefer you to turn OFF your phone but accept there are circumstances where it may be required to be on. In this case please ensure it is set to SILENT and it may be advantageous for you to seat yourself towards the rear of the hall.

Members receive general information relating to u3a issues, followed by a guest speaker who provides an interesting talk on a variety of topics. A "Newsletter" available most months provides details of current and future activities. Tea and coffee is available to purchase.

In accordance with fire regulations, a count of all members attending the monthly meetings so members are asked to show their current membership card to have their attendance recorded on arrival. New members, visitors and any member that have misplaced their membership card are asked to sign the visitors book.

Membership costs-From the 1st April 2024 our annual subscription will be £15 OR £19 if you require a TAM magazine. New members joining in January, February or March before the April 1st renewal, will pay the £15 or £19 and will qualify for 13, 14 or 15 months membership for their first year.

Getting to General Meetings:

Would members who regularly have problems getting to General Meetings or know of other members who cannot get to General Meetings, please make themselves known to an Executive Committee Member and state what area they live in - this is especially if it is an area which is not on a bus route.
