Family History

Our Family History Group welcomes both beginners and more experienced researchers. We hope to all learn together through an informal meeting once a month where we pick a theme to discuss, share stories and information and talk through brick walls.

The Family History Group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month 2:00pm - 4:00pm at the Corringham Evangelical Church Hall, 45 Fobbing Road, Corringham, SS17 9BN (Just past the Fire Station and Cemetery on the same side of the road).

Another part of the Family History group is Family History Extra. This group is for Family History research using resources available on-line. Join the Family History group and you also have the opportunity to come along to the computer sessions to research websites alongside the more experienced members of the group. The computer sessions are normally held at Basildon Library and usually involve research using ANCESTRY, FIND MY PAST and the British Newspaper Archive website. These are available free at Basildon library and other Essex County Council libraries.

The computer sessions are on the 1st Wednesday of every month from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. We have six computers booked out to us and we pair an experienced researcher with a new researcher so that we help each other.

If you have never tried researching your family tree and want to have look at how easy it is before committing to joining the group, get in touch and we will organise a one to one session with you to get you started.
All you need for a good starting point is details of a relative who could be found on the 1911 census.

You will be very welcome to join us but please advise me each month by email or telephone that you are coming, as we are a very big group now (over 30), and if more than 12 book, we will need to organise some laptops to ensure everyone has some research time. You can bring along your fully charged up laptop (no nearby plugs available unfortunately) if you wish.

Booking is essential as the sessions are very popular and we only have a limited number of computers available to us.

Sue is taking a break from leading the group for a few months but it will be in good hands with Diane and Peter stepping in to keep the momentum going.
