Group Convener - Doug Thompson
In this group we shall be focusing on six modern novels, all written between 1930 and 1970 and all of them, in some measure, a reflection of, and reaction to contemporary events. These were, of course, the years of Mussolini’s Fascist Regime in Italy, of the Second World War, and of the gradual social and economic regeneration of the country after 1945.
Each of our chosen novelists illuminates and comments on different phases and aspects of this history, its deeper roots and broader background, beginning with the oppression of the peasantry, in Silone’s Fontamara, the political struggle in the countryside during the War and its immediate aftermath, in Pavese’s The Moon and the Bonfires, through to longer views of the ‘lessons of history’ of united Italy, in the writings of Lampedusa, Sciascia, Bassani and Calvino.
We shall be meeting for a two-hour session each month.
