Balsam Bashers

Himalayan balsam is a problematic plant. It competes with native plants for light, nutrients, pollinators and space, excluding other plants and reducing biodiversity. It dies back in the winter, leaving river banks bare and open to erosion.

In2021 there will be a concerted effort to erradicate this weed from the Keswick area, lead by Keswick Town Council and West Cumbria Rivers Trust. They hope that various groups will take responsibility for particular areas. For example the cycling Groups will take on The White Horse to Mungrisdale via the gated road.

I hope toform other groups from U3A members to tackle other areas in the Glendermakin catchment. Balsam bashing will be arranged as required sometimes at short notice.

You will need long sleeves and trousers, gardening gloves and sturdy footwear.
