New Groups News
For details of how to register your interest in a proposed new group or to suggest a new group, please see the contact information below.
Have Pass Will Travel - LAUNCHED!
A group for those keen to put their free bus pass to use. A trial outing has been arranged on Monday 30th April to Ludlow. Members are invited to board the Minsterley Motors 435 to Ludlow departing from Shrewsbury bus station at 0955hrs (Stand N). You can also hop on at Old Potts Way (1000hrs), Bayston Hill (1007hrs), Condover (1012hrs) and Dorrington (1020hrs). Enjoy a day out with fellow U3A members on this Ludlow market day and return in company on one of the hourly buses.
This group now holds the record for the fastest ever suggestion and launch. It was suggested at Coffee Time on Friday, 30 March 2018 and the first expedition was decided within 20 minutes. Just one example of the benefits of going to Coffee Time.
The One Club - LAUNCHED!
A brilliant suggestion for a group which will hopefully lead to keen interest. Have you got tips and advice about single-living to pass on? Inaugural meeting to take place on Friday 13th April at 10.30am, Camellias Tea Rooms (St. Butcher Row, SY1 1UJ). Register your interest with our New Groups Facilitator or just turn up.
Cryptic Crosswords for Beginners
Would you like to understand the convoluted thinking processes of those fiendish cryptic crossword compilers? You would? Well, you are in luck, as this group is just taking its first steps. Two meetings have already taken place and if any interested members would like to contact me, I will pass on their details to the Coordinator.
Greek Language for Beginners
Please let me know if you might be interested in joining this group.
Local History 2
The existing Local History Group is full and cannot accommodate any new members so a new group is proposed.
I'm not sure whether this would work as a group but, if not, a register of those prepared to offer skills to other members in exchange for receiving the benefit of the skills of others would certainly be very useful.
Walking in the Woods with Mindfulness
Jonathan Brown has recently joined U3A, and is keen to find out if any members would like to join him in walking with mindfulness through some of the atmospheric woods not far from Shrewsbury. The therapeutic benefits of doing so have long been recognised by people in Japan, where ‘Shinrin-Yoku’, translated into English as ‘forest bathing', means taking in the forest atmosphere during a leisurely walk. It is a therapy that was developed during the 1980s, becoming a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine.
Jonathan will be leading the walks and you can phone or text him on 07497 142 485, or you can email email@example.com.
We have been unable to find a teacher/tutor and the suggestion that the group's members should follow an audio course with assistance, in the short term, from a Welsh-speaker, did not attract much of a response. If anyone can help this group to get off the ground, please let me know.
To register your interest in joining one of the above proposed groups, please contact me by email stating your name and telephone number(s). In each case, if there is sufficient interest, I will arrange an inaugural meeting of potential members in order to get the group started.
Proposed new groups are also listed on the Groups list page of the Beacon System, where U3A members can join the waiting lists.
If you wish to see a new group started, please contact me by email giving the information requested above together with a brief outline of the proposed aims of the group. Don’t be afraid! We will consider anything legal and you do not necessarily have to be the co-ordinator of the group that you propose.
