An Introduction to Creating PowerPoint Presentations

Today U3A Members need to impart so much information to other members that the use of a visual format is generally the best option, for which PowerPoint offers an easy solution. Words and images can be rapidly put together in a series of slides that can then be run on almost any computer. That computer can in turn be connected to either a projector or large TV screen for an audience to view.

Only basic IT skills of mouse, keyboard and file handling are required. Once the fundamentals are gained PowerPoint offers editing features for both words and images as simple or complex as the user desires without ever having to go outside the program. The latest version includes Design Ideas that can turn your presentation into a masterpiece without having to be a specialist. See the attached sheet.

Organisation - The day is to be organised in three Sessions and a lunch break:

Session 1: An introduction to PowerPoint from the Beginner’s Perspective
• The basic concepts of creating a presentation with ideas on where to store your ideas, reference documents and images, prior to putting words and images on slides
• Finding your way around a slide and what you can change
• Fundamentals of slide: background design, colours and fonts
• Different types of slides and Master slides
• A work-through of the main Ribbons and Menus
• Creating a new slide, the working areas, boundaries, edges, colours, bullets and numbers
• Importing images, shapes, sizing, editing, order, grouping, transitions, animations, movies
• Further improving slide clarity, section title slides, hyperlinks, user notes
• Set up the slide show, Presenter View, printing copies of the slides

Session 2: Demonstration of the Main Features

Lunch Break

Session 3: Practical where participants experiment with features

Additional Information

What is required to attend
• A laptop PC with Internet capability plus mains power supply running Windows 10 (1903 preferred) loaded with a post 2016 copy of PowerPoint so as to contain the tools described
• A Packed lunch
• Note/ideas that can be turned into a series of slides during the practical

Cost
• £2 to cover liquid refreshments and copies of the slides
