Local History
This Group explores the history and events throughout Sussex.
Group Coordinator: | Sue |
Days/times: | First Monday of the month, at 2.00pm |
Venue: | The Shoreham Centre, Room 2 |
You might be a long-standing resident with memories of your own or a relative newcomer wishing to learn about the area but together we will explore not only Shoreham and Southwick but also Worthing, Brighton, Hove and Portslade too. There will also be times when we will “travel” throughout Sussex as a whole.
This is a participatory group rather than one led by an expert and therefore members are requested to undertake a little research and share with the group.
Recently we explored Cinemas past and present from Worthing to Portslade, The History of The Theatre Royal, Brighton and Chichester Festival Theatre, The Valiant Bomb crash in Southwick, and The History of The Swiss Gardens, Shoreham. Also members presented mini-topics ranging from The nuns and their driving lessons at The Convent, Shoreham Houseboats and St Julian’s Church to The History of Brighton Bandstand.
In the coming months we will be investigating The Devil’s Dyke Railway and The Kemp Town Branch Line in September, The Chain Pier, West Pier and Worthing Pier in October as part of the 2023 celebration of Year of The Pier. In November various members will present ‘On the street where you live/lived’ and in December we will celebrate a Sussex Christmas part 2.
And of course ideas are always welcome from members throughout the year.
This group is currently over-subscribed, but you are more than welcome to register your interest and have your name placed on a waiting list.
