Pop up - Astronomy
In the absence of a regularly meeting Astronomy interest group, this pop up group page is where occasional Astronomy events or Planetarium activities organised by members will be notified, together with details of forthcoming astronomical occurrences that might be of interest to members.
See immediately below for our next Astronomy event - and further down the page for reports on past events.
No activities are currently scheduled. Please check back again in a couple of months. Better still why not suggest an activity and maybe help the coordinator to organise it. Use the bluebird email box on this page to contact the coordinator.
Reports on Past Events.
Report on our Visit to South Downs Planetarium and Science Centre at Chichester in March 2017.
The Centre provided a dedicated session just for our U3A - 23 of us participated in all. Once again we were warmly welcomed with refreshments before moving into the Dr John Mason, who , covered a wide range of topics, especially recent research and space programmes relating to the planets in our solar system.
Supermoon - The night of Monday 14th November 2016
Sadly it was cloudy pretty much right across Sussex so we didn't get so much as a glimpse of the moon. However, Hamish took a photo on Sunday night which he's passed on for others to see.
Report on our Visit to South Downs Planetarium and Science Centre at Chichester in March 2016.
The Centre provided a dedicated session just for our U3A - 32 of us participated in all. We had a really interesting and informative session, which lasted over an hour and a half with questions. The presenter, Dr Mason, who is an astronomer and physicist, covered a wide range of topics and happily engaged with the many questions we came up with.
A couple of photographs of the Viewlex-Minolta S-IIb star projector which projects the stars can be seen to the right. This equipment dates from 1977,and was acquired from Armagh Planetarium and recommissioned by volunteers at the Centre.
