Monthly Friday Events
In addition to the various activity group sessions, Shoreham & Southwick u3a holds a monthly event for all its members, usually on the last Friday of the month in the Main Hall of The Shoreham Centre, Pond Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5WU.
These events are an opportunity to meet up and socialise with other members over tea or coffee and hear a variety of interesting speakers and performers. Please arrive at 1.45pm for 2.00pm start.
The cost is £2.00 for members including refreshments.
Non-members are very welcome to join us for most meetings (at a cost of £3.50) to hear the presentation, join us for a cup of tea or coffee and to find out more about our u3a with a view to joining.

Fri May 31st | Illustrated talk: 'Marilyn Stafford, Photographer' by Nina Emett About Nina Emett's talk ... Marilyn Stafford was a British photographer. Born and raised in the United States, she moved to Paris as a young woman, where she began working as a photojournalist. She settled in London, but travelled and worked across the world, including in Tunisia, India, and Lebanon. She was born in 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. She died on 2 January 2023, in Shoreham-by-Sea. About Nina ... Nina is founding Director of FotoDocument, where she has worked as commissioner and curator since 2012. She is a passionate believer in visual story-telling to engage people in powerful narratives. In 2015 she won a People Environment Achievement Award for FotoDocument’s acclaimed ‘One Planet City’ environmental project. She has worked as a photographer widely including for The Independent, Amnesty International, PwC, Brighton & Hove City Council and she is currently finalising her photo book about a women’s worker co-operative in India. Nina was Strategic Lead for Brighton & Hove City Council’s anti-racism strategy (2005-09) and Director of the refugee education charity Salusbury World (1999–03). She holds a BA Hons in French, Postgrad Dip in Photojournalism & MSc in International Development. Non-members welcome |
Fri Jun 28th | Illustrated talk: 'Behind the Scenes at Centre Court, Part Two' by Alan Chalmers We are delighted to welcome the return of Alan Chalmers, this time to give us part 2 of his 2023 presentation on some of the inside stories at Wimbledon. Non-members welcome |
Fri Jul 26th | Mike Scott Rumble presents 'A Walk in the Park' For ten years the speaker headed up the policing of over ninety parks, gardens, cemeteries and open spaces in The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The talk will look at the history of public parks, the evolution of the ‘Parkie’ from Victorian times to a specialist policing unit. The talk will also include some of the amusing and unusual events encountered in that decade. These included the visit of the Emperor of Japan; hosting the Olympic Torch, together with the mystery of the disappearing python; the case of the Rochester cat, the incredible spurting man and the middle eastern potentate – amongst others. An unusual and amusing talk is assured. About Mike: Mike Scott Rumble worked in the public sector for 50 years, both as a Police Officer and in local government. His last post was a Head of the Parks Police Service in Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham. He is currently Chairman of the White Lion Society (Friends of HM College of Arms). He is a Green Flag scheme Judge (Parks & Gardens) and Independent Person on the Standards Committee of a local District Council. He has a passionate interest in Heraldry, Police History, Airships, Uniforms, badges and memorabilia as well as being a competent artist and illustrator. He is able to provide his own projector and equipment for talks and always has an interesting tale to tell! Non-members welcome |
