Walking 2 - Monday Strollers
"On Monday 15th July we will be walking from Hangleton up to the downs along the old Devils Dyke Railway track which is tarmaced on a gentle shaded slope up to the B&H golf club house where we will be welcomed for refreshments. To come back, there is the option of a lovely and safe path along the golf course with beautiful views over the hills and Brighton, wild meadows, butterflies, and I even spotted orchids.
The leader will be Francoise and as usual we will be meeting at 9.45 for 10.00am start. To get to the meeting point drive up Hangleton Way, just past the old church near the top is a small shopping parade and a car park signposted "Devils Dyke Rail Trail Car Park" where we will meet, also there is parking on the street if the car park is full.
Please ring me on 01903 765642 on the morning of the walk between 8.30 and 9.00am to advise if you are coming, and/or to check if the walk is not cancelled due to the weather. If anyone requires a lift please ring Fleur on 01273 461404 3-4 days before the walk and she will try to put you in touch with someone who lives near you.
For drivers, the mileage to Hangleton from Shoreham is approx 4½ miles each way, equating to £2.70 to be shared between driver and passengers.
This is our last walk until September, so it would be great to see as many of you as can come.

If you have been on any of the Strollers walks this year I will keep you on the mailing list unless I hear from you that you wish to be removed, but you will be deleted if you have not been on any of my walks this year but you can reregister if you wish to stay on the list.

GUIDELINES FOR SHOREHAM & SOUTHWICK U3A
STROLLERS WALKING GROUP
All walkers in the group must be a current Shoreham & Southwick U3A member and walk at your own risk. Walks will be monthly, on the 3rd Monday of each month. Each walk will be approx. 3-4 miles in length, and can include stiles and inclines. All walks should be within approx. 10 -15 miles
of Shoreham/Southwick. We will meet at 9.45 for a 10.00am start, unless stated in the details for any particular walk.
Please wear suitable clothing, including long trousers, walking shoes/boots, bring walking sticks if required, and bring any medications and fresh water.
You should have emergency contact details with you either on your mobile phone listed under ICE (in case of emergency), or put ICE in front ofthe names of those people you would like contacted in an emergency, or write your Emergency Contact Details on the back of your U3A membership card. These places would be checked by Emergency Services for information should it be needed.
It might be an idea to keep a list of your medications or carry a copy of your perscriptions with you, perhaps in your purse or wallet or whatever you take with you when you go out and about, not just for our U3A walks and outings.
If you wish to attend please ring the walk leader on the morning of the walk between 8.30-9.00am to check that the walk will be still going ahead. Please bring your new membership card to show me on your first walk.
We try to arrange lifts if required. I will supply contact details of the Transport Organiser when I send out the details before the walk, and she will try to put you in touch with a member who lives near you. She will then supply you with their contact details and it will be up to you to tie up the details for pick up. Please remember to offer a voluntary contribution to petrol costs at 30p. per mile. I will try to supply the mileage when the destination is outside of our immediate area, so that
it is easy to work out what each car's cost will be and that can then be divided by the number of persons in the car (including the driver).
Leaders are needed for each walk, and we would not be able to continue these walks without volunteers to lead, so please consider maybe offering to lead your favourite walk. It will need to be walked in advance to check that it has not changed since your last visit, that it is not too muddy and
that there are no new obstacles in place.
Dates and walks are sometimes amended to allow for conditions underfoot and other factors.
The walks programme until July 2019 is still being developed but is likely to be as shown below. Full details of each walk will be given further down a few days before the walk

Our next walk on Monday 20th May will be walking in Hassocks along the railway line from Hassocks to Clayton where you can see the Jack and Jill windmills on the top of the Downs, a turnaround and a short detour through Butcher's Wood where there are bluebells, back on the footpath, then off to the right into some housing, and back to the middle of Hassocks via Downs View Road. Refreshments afterwards can be taken at any of the five cafes in Hassocks or drive to the South Downs Nurseries (Tates) which is very near there. The leader will be Ros and as this is further away than usual we will meet at Buckingham Park in Shoreham and fill up the cars and we can leave any unneeded cars in that car park. We will meet in the park at 9.45am for departing at 10am.
