Beach Cleaning/Litter Picking
The group meets to carry out Beach Surveys for the Marine Conservation Society in January, April, July, and for the Annual International Coastal Clean Up in September. Plus other ad hoc meetings as shown below.
The results of the surveys are very important. The Marine Conservation Society publish the UK findings in a report at the end of the year which receives huge Media Coverage.
Despite the title of this group, historically we have not only cleaned /litter picked the beach, but also venues in Shoreham-by-Sea.
Group Coordinator: | Jean |
Historically, our venues included Adur Rec, Widewater, and Buckingham Park, however there are now local groups associated with the places who carry out their own litter picks. We still litter pick Shoreham Beach and Monarchs way Southwick, as well as surveying Shoreham Beach.
We welcome suggestions from our members regarding venues they feel may benefit from our attention during the months we are not beach cleaning. These dates will be ad hoc, usually third Tuesday in the month.
Proposed schedule 2024/25:
All meetings are subject to Weather and Tidal Conditions and will be cancelled in adverse weather conditions, or re-arranged due to High Tides.
Tuesday September 24th 2024: Beach Clean Survey and Litter Pick at Shoreham Beach.
Tuesday January 21st 2025: Beach Clean Survey and Litter Pick at Shoreham Beach.
Tuesday April 15th 2025: Beach Clean Survey and Litter Pick at Shoreham Beach.
Tuesday July 22nd 2025: Beach Clean Survey and Litter Pick at Shoreham Beach.
Any ad hoc litter picks will be carried out on a third Thursday in any given month. Dates will be notified as and when their registration with the Council has been agreed. The criteria for these ad hoc events are that the area should be local, easily accessible by foot, by bus, by bicycle or by car for those who wish to drive. Litter Pickers, Hi Vis vests, hoops and blue bags are provided. The Council arrange collection of the bags at the end of each session.
Group members are required to provide their own gloves and protective clothing according to the relevant terrain on the day. Health and safety information will be provided via email before the event.
