Fosseway Café Orchestra
The Fosseway Café Orchestra was formed in May 2014 under the leadership of Christine Holyhead. The orchestra continues to grow and has a good spread of instruments with about 30 members.
We play a wide variety of music, mainly classical pieces. Our players are normally Grade 4-7 but we welcome anyone who can play 4 reliable notes. So, if you learnt to play a musical instrument at school or started later in life and would like to play pieces with others, why not come along and join us at our weekly meetings? We are always keen to welcome new members, particularly string players.
A normal rehearsal has around 20 players as many of us have grandchildren, jobs or take perpetual holidays! Currently meeting by Zoom on the last Tuesday of each month. "We agree a particular piece to practise in preparation for our splendid reopening!" (In normal times we meet on Tuesdays in Stretton-on-Fosse Village Hall GL56 9QX from 9.45am to 12.15pm.The charge is £18 per school term or £2 per week. There is good free parking!)
After 2 sessions you must become a member of a U3A of your choice.
Programme of Events
Over the past year, the Orchestra has enjoyed a full programme, which included 2 concerts, 2 school visits, hosting a Welcome Morning for new members and 2 recording sessions for Radio Cherwell.
The school visits were to Tredington Primary School in June and St David's Primary School, Moreton-in-Marsh in December. Both visits were very well received by the staff and schoolchildren and very enjoyable for members of the Orchestra.
In June, the Orchestra performed a 'Summer Serenade' concert, as part of the Shipston Proms season. At the end of the year, the orchestra were invited to perform a programme of Christmas music in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-on-Avon. The orchestra felt very privileged to play in such a wonderfully inspiring setting and greatly encouraged by the enthusiastic and supportive audience, (see pictures below)
