We have two creative writing groups.
Writing for Fun meets in the morning on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Manor Court in Sherborne. Our main aim is to enjoy writing and listening to each other's pieces. A subject is given to the group at the end of each meeting and forms the basis for homework to compose a piece of approximately 400 words. At the next meeting, each person reads out his or her contribution in turn and it is interesting to hear how each person’s interpretation differs in style and meaning. When the Group was first started the intention was to criticise each piece in an attempt to encourage publication. However this is no longer the case and the end result is that we derive a great deal of enjoyment from just listening to other people’s work. If there is time after everyone has read out their piece we sometimes have a quick ten minute writing session on a randomly chosen subject.
Writing for Pleasure and Profit meets every Wednesday morning between 10.30 am and 12..30 pm at the group leader's home in Sherborne. We are a small group and start with any admin. and news updates from everyone. This is usually followed by a writing topic, accompanied by handouts. We have discussed numerous aspects of writing and the techniques involved and try to tailor new and revision topics to suit individuals and the group as a whole. We welcome both practising writers and beginners and the whole ethos is that of encouragement and support. Everyone has the opportunity to read their own work and the critique sessions are always extremely positive and helpful. A number of past and present group members have been successful in competitions and some have published their work. The group continues to thrive.
