Travel - Visit to Slovenia Sept 2020
12th - 19th SEPTEMBER 2020
TO SLOVENIA, ISTRIA & TRIESTE: A TRIO OF JEWELS
THIS HOLIDAY IS BEING ORGANISED BY SHAFTESBURY & GIILLINGHAM U3A BUT MEMBERS FROM OTHER U3As IN THE AREA ARE VERY WELCOME TOO
(Please note the date very carefully as it is not until next year, giving you time to save up your pennies – or should I say pounds?)
Slovenia’s pretty shoreline, lapped by the Adriatic Sea, is lined with colourful fishing villages & silvery olive groves. From our base here, we can enjoy our other destinations: to the south, the Croatian peninsula of Istria slices into the same sparkling blue waters. Characterised by miles of coastline, this region has its own unique identity evident in its Roman ruins, Venetian faҫades and elegant resorts. To the north, the Italian port of Trieste is a fascinating place to visit, thanks to its unique mélange of cultures and delightful range of sights, museums and neo-classical architecture.
The 4-star Remisens Premium Casa Rosa is located close to the beach and a short walk from the centre of Portorož. Surrounded by greenery, the hotel benefits from wonderful views. It shares the facilities of next door Remisens Premium Hotel Metropol, including the restaurants, lounge, bar, terraces, indoor and outdoor pool –both free of charge to hotel guests. All comfortable, stylish en-suite rooms have a private balcony, air-conditioning, WiFi, television, safe and hairdryer.
Outline of Suggested Itinerary
Day 1 - Meet the coach in Gillingham or Shaftesbury, and travel to the UK airport for our flight departure (details to be confirmed later). On arrival, we will transfer by a local coach, with an English-speaking guide, to our hotel in Portorož. Dinner is included at the hotel each evening.
Day 2 - Today we enjoy an included guided excursion to the unique Italian city of Trieste. Historically, a great Habsburg seaport, it has both a grand waterfront and a medieval Old Town. Centuries of being a frontier town and a variety of influences, including Italian, Slovenian, Croatian and Austro-Hungarian, make this a truly enchanting city to explore. We enjoy time at leisure here before heading back to Portorož.
Day 3 - Today we head to Istria in Croatia for an included guided excursion to Rovinj and Poreč.. Poreč has a charming smattering of Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque architecture. A little further down the coast, is Rovinj, surely vying for the title of most picturesque town in Istria. It is a delightful town with its pastel faҫades, cobbled piazzas, charming alleyways and a pretty belltower. The imposing St. Euphemia’s Church looks out over the compact port town and the sapphire sea surrounding Rovinj’s tiny peninsula.
Day 4 - Today is spent at leisure to relax at the hotel or enjoy the beach resort of Portorož.
Day 5 - Choose to spend today either at leisure, or take the optional guided excursion to Slovenia’s Karst wine region. In the morning, we enjoy a panoramic cruise along the Slovenia Coast, spotting pretty coastal towns. We disembark to explore the medieval town of Piran, a gem tucked between the sea and mighty fortified walls. We continue to the Karst region, which is known for its full-bodied, ruby teran – a true Slovenian wine. We stop for a wine-tasting before heading to one of the oldest settlements in the area, Štanjei. This ancient village enchants visitors with its stunning views, its castle, and the lovely Ferrari Gardens.
Day 6 - Today we depart on an included guided excursion to explore traditional rural life in Slovenia: a tranquil world of quaint old villages surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and orchards. We visit Sveti Peter with its important ethnological museum; Dekani, where we enjoy tastings of local products, including wine and olive oil; and Hrastvolje with its admirable 12th century painted church. Finally, we drive back to Socerb, home to a castle with incredible views, and a history dating back to Roman times.
Day 7 - Choose to spend today at leisure, or on an optional guided excursion to Škocjan Caves and the Lipica Stud Farm. The UNESCO-listed cave system is an underground canyon formed by the Reka River, and filled with astounding rock formations and natural wonders. Lipica is the oldest stud farm in Europe, and has been continuously rearing classical horse breeds since the farm was begun in the 16th century. A presentation of the National Riding School here is also included in the visit.
Day 8 - Sadly, it’s time to return home. After checking out of the hotel, our coach and guide will take us to the airport for our flight back to England, where we will be met by our local coach and driver for our return journey to Shaftesbury and Gillingham.
At the time of arranging these details, the flight routes and times are not known but they will be advised in due course. The exact order of excursions too may be subject to change. Costs of optional excursions will also be given at a later date, and will be dependent on the number of bookings.
