HOLIDAY FOR MEMBERS IN JUNE 2019 TO NORTHERN CROATIA AND SLOVENIA

(Please note the date very carefully as it is not until next year, giving you time to save up your pennies (or should I say pounds?)

Destinations
Once a fashionable retreat for the wealthy of Vienna, the elegant resort of Opatija is stunningly located overlooking the Kvamer Gulf. This attractive coastal town sits on a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and the foothills of the Ucka mountain range. Take a stroll along Opatija's famous 12km coastal promenade, where you will pass many of its shingle beaches, all lined with impressive villa's and pretty gardens. In the midst of the Alps lies the stunning Lake Bled, with its own tiny island, home to the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria. The town of Bled is amongst the most beautiful of alpine resorts, renowned for its mild, healing climate and thermal lake water. Relax and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the mountains reflected in the lake.

Hotels
The Agava Hotel is situated in a wonderful old villa in the centre of Opatija in the immediate vicinity of the Angiolina Park with a magnificent view of Kvarner Bay. Each bedroom has a bathroom (walk-in shower), hairdryer, satellite TV, safe and mini bar. Outline of Suggested Itinerary
Day 1 – SW Coaches transfer us from our local area to Bristol Airport for the flight to Pula, in Northern Croatia. You will be met by a local coach and a guide to transfer the group to your hotel. Welcome drink and dinner included this evening.
Day 2 - This morning with the help of our local guide we have an INCLUDED tour to explore Opatija on foot. Opatija is one of the most elegant of the Istrian towns. The afternoon will be at leisure where you could, if you wish, visit St. James Church and the Swiss House as well as Villa Angiolina. Built in 1844 by Iginio Scarpa, a rich merchant from nearby Rijeka, Villa Angiolina was one of the first tourist resorts in Opatija and today it serves as the museum of Croatian Tourism. Dinner in the evening at the hotel.
Day 3 - Optional Excursion. Full day guided excursion to Krk Island, the largest Croatian Island. The day begins in Punat, a charming quiet town with narrow streets that lead to typical seaside houses with their arched doorways. The town is also famed for its production of olives. Lastly a visit to the historical town of Vrbnik, famous for its wine production before returning back to Opatija. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 - This morning we depart Opatija and, joined by a new guide, we travel over the border into Slovenia and to Lake Bled where we will be staying for the next four nights in the Park Hotel. In the afternoon, the Optional guided excursion will take us by boat to Bled Island to visit the Church of the Assumption of Maria with its beautiful Baroque interior. After the boat trip, our coach will transfer us to the far side of the lake from our hotel, where we will visit Bled Castle, reached by a winding path up to the cliff-top above the lake, and with stunning views from the top. There is plenty to see in the Castle, including a museum housing art, furniture, lace-making, and agricultural implements. Dinner at the hotel later that evening.
Day 5 - INCLUDED Excursion. Full day guided scenic excursion to incorporate the Alpine town of Kranska Gora, the stunning Vrsic Mountain Pass & the Trenta Valley which leads to the Soca River, the mountain town of Bovec and, by crossing the border into Italy, we shall visit Lake Predil. Dinner later on at the hotel.
Day 6 - Optional Excursion. Full day guided scenic excursion to Vintgar Gorge (with admission) with a beautiful cliff-edge wooden path which leads to Sum Waterfall. Further picturesque stops will include Lake Bohinji, Triglav National Park and the Savica Waterfall (with admission). Dinner at the hotel.
Day 7 - Today we travel a short distance to Ljubljana for our INCLUDED excursion. Beginning with a morning walking tour with our guide of this beautiful capital city. In 2016, it was chosen as the European Continent’s new ‘Green Capital’ - a different capital is chosen each year. Given Ljubljana’s history as a city behind the Iron Curtain for 50 years and damage from the Yugoslavian civil war, you wouldn’t expect to see such a beautiful, medieval town with its lovely old streets either side of the Ljubljanica River, lined with baroque and art nouveau buildings, numerous beautiful fountains, a market place, excellent indoor and outdoor restaurants, lovely shops, the Baroque Town Hall building and the famous Robba Fountain, the Dragon Bridge (an Art Nouveau masterpiece), the architect Jože Pleènik's Križanke’s Summer Theatre, not to mention the beautiful Castle set high up on a hill and reached by funicular cable railway). One of the best things about this stunning capital city is the fact that all traffic is banned from the centre and parking is largely confined to underground car parks! (Oh, that we could do this in the UK!) The afternoon will be at leisure for individual exploration before returning by coach to the Park Hotel, with dinner served later in the evening.
Day 8 - Your coach & guide will transfer us to the airport for our return flight to the UK, where we will met by SW Coaches for the return transfer to North Dorset.
