Shaftesbury & Gillingham

Philosophy

The Philosophy and Discussion Group is based on the principle of Critical Thought. We meet in Gillingham once a month, as agreed by the previous meeting. This is usually in the afternoon of the last, or last but one, Tuesday of the month. We discuss and analyse the subject agreed at the previous meeting. Every member is expected to contribute. Discussion are aimed to discover the truth. They are robust but polite. We try to make subjects topical. Recent questions have included:

“What is the utility of Art?”

“Is there such a thing as a Just War?”

“What is Civilisation?”

“Do we need Strong Leadership? - Use the example of Fascism!”

“What is the role of Government?” We did invite our MP but he was busy - he asked to be considered in the future!

“What is the legacy of Slavery?”

“Are we more isolated now than we used to be?”

“Define religion, and does it still have any utility ?”
