The main purpose of the Genealogy Group is to provide a focus for members to share their experiences (triumphs/frustrations/brickwalls), gain help and advice, improve research skills and knowledge, and enjoy friendship with other local amateur genealogists. This is achieved through sharing resources, regular presentations on relevant topics and the use of the internet.
With the meetings being held in Scunthorpe Central (formerly Scunthorpe Central Library), we have very good WiFi reception and we also have use of an extremely large Television screen for our "projections". Additionally, this floor houses the local and family history section of the library, tyogether with access to research sites "FindMyPast" and "The Genealogist". The section also has a new fully digitised microfiche reader with a link for printing those vital documents.
The proposed future schedule is as follows:
27th June, 11th July (update on World War 1 records), 5th September (examining/dating old photographs - including military photographs), 19th September - how to search newspaper archives, 3rd October - how to trace globe-trotting ancestors, 17th October - Irish family research, 31st October - looking at Roman Catholic records, 14th November (topic to be arranged).
Parking for Scunthorpe Central - there are car parks behind the market and alongside Humberside UTC - both of which are free for the first 2 hours and then a charge applies. If parking in the multi-story next to the bus station parking is free for 2 hours until 2pm after which time it is free. (i.e. parking after midday for the session from 1 - 4pm will attract no parking charges).
New members are welcome. Please get in touch.
