Cancellation of U3A meetings from the Corona Virus
Following government advice, the March monthly meeting has been cancelled. As yet we don’t know what will happen to later meetings. We are awaiting more advice from National Office about the AGM which we normally hold before the May meeting. We have to hold an AGM no later than 15 months after the last AGM, which would be July.
Our intention had been to distribute nomination forms for committee members at the March meeting to be returned at the April meeting. This won’t be happening and hopefully there will be more information available in time for the next newsletter.
Those of you who have not paid your membership subscriptions for 2020 can do so by posting your cheque together with a stamped, self-addressed envelope to:
Gordon Green (Membership Secretary), 57 Ferry Road, Scunthorpe DN15 8LY.
Your 2020/21 Membership Card will be posted back to you. If you do not include an s.a.e., then your membership card can be collected at the next monthly meeting.
Group convenors will be contacting their group members, if they have not already done so, about future meetings. The advice to stay at home and not come to a meeting if you feel ill, still applies.
We are concerned about the long term effects of self isolation on our older members and would ask that friends do try and keep in touch with them regularly by phone or even Skype.
U3A now have a dedicated page on their website to keep all members up to date with latest guidance and advice. There is also a detailed advice sheet which gives additional information. Both can be found by clicking the Links on the right.
The best advice to try and prevent the spread of the Corona virus is still to wash your hands thoroughly and regularly with soap. This breaks down the outer layer of the virus and is much more effective than gel hand wash.
Make an effort not to touch your eyes, mouth or nose with your hands.
Cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve or a tissue (not your hands) when you cough sneeze. Put used tissues in a bin straight away.
If you need to take a pain killer, take paracetamol rather than ibuprofen as anti-inflammatory drugs can worsen the virus. .
Stay at least 3 feet away from anyone who is sneezing or coughing.
Most infection is spread by hands touching the face. This video discusses the effectiveness or not of face masks & can be seen by clicking the Link on the right called Do Face Masks Work
Government advice is that if anyone in your house displays either of the 2 symptoms of the virus (a persistent cough or high temperature) then everyone in your house must self-isolate for 14 days
Stay safe everyone.
