Sandwell

HISTORY/ENVIRONMENT

Leader Tony Fowler
Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Community Room, Central Library, West Bromwich.
Time 2-4pm

The focus of this group is local history and the environment of Sandwell but members request that we look at adjoining towns as well. The villages, towns and counties adjoining our connurbation offer enormous contrasts to explore.

Many topics are chosen by members; sessions led by members based on their knowledge, interests and experience are extremely popular. Recollections of the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's vie with consideration of current changes planned for our towns and parks. Schools, factories and cherished local institutions are disappearing rapidly; it is hoped we can help put on record information about them before they are lost.

Well known local historians return annually by popular request; updates on local archaeology contrasts with local development plans; and visits to local places of interest form an integral part of the annual programme.
