French Group 3
Group 3 (Monday)
Fortnightly group meetings contain several people of widely varying standards taking place on Monday mornings and lasting 2 hours. Some people have been in the group for several years, while others admit to being beginners. French 3 is somewhat similar to French 4. We have access to the same materials, and one person attends both 3 and 4.
The content of a meeting is decided according the needs of members. This does depend on the time of year. Some of us go to France in the summer. There is often discussion in French of the members’ activities during the previous week. We present some general scenarios like buying things in a market, booking into a hotel, asking the way etc., with a range of typical replies they can expect.
BBC language learning videos like “A Vous la France”, “Talk French” and “The French Experience” are useful for tuning in to spoken French. I also use tapes and discs.
The first book we used was “French in Three Months.” (Hugo) ISBN 1-4053-0100-7; but it was getting a little repetitive after ten years, so Group 3 now has also “Improve Your French” (Jean-Claude Arragon) ISBN 0-340-870617.
The group is differs from group 4, group 3 being aimed more at domestic, practical and conversational situations rather than creating written French. The best thing is to come and see for yourself.
