French Life and Language

We welcome anyone who is interested in France and the French language. Our aim is generally to improve our spoken French and extend our knowledge of France and French life and culture. Members have differing degrees of fluency in the language and we try to direct you towards a group which will suit your needs, but this is always flexible.

Les Causeurs, otherwise known as Group 2, who have studied French to a certain level and used it often in our travels. We enjoy holding informal conversations in French, which may arise from topical snippets, our own experience or seasonal items, which we prepare ahead, in order to practise and gain confidence in using everyday language. The emphasis is on understanding and making ourselves understood, rather than accuracy, so that we are not so ‘rusty’ the next time we visit the country.

Members of Group 3, the most fluent group, have learned the language to quite a high level and usually spent some time living in a French speaking country, so we enjoy keeping up, and indeed challenging our skills by reading and talking about aspects of life in France. We usually meet once a month to exchange news and read and discuss a text which broadens our knowledge of France and the French language.

We usually try to organise an event in summer for Bastille Day, thanks to Patricia, at which all the U3A groups come together to share our love of France, its language, culture and cuisine, and we have enjoyed a game of boules in Patricia’s garden.

We don’t currently have a beginners’ group, (or Group 1) as previous members have moved on to more conversational groups but if there is enough demand, Berwyn will be happy to run a 6 week refresher course for anyone who feels too rusty to fit straight in to a conversational group

If you would like to join any of the groups, please send an enquiry Julia Roberts and I will give you more details.
