We are a small group which meets monthly from September to May. Each year we choose one or two poets or an anthology to study and enjoy. This year we have studied the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins in the autumn term, which we have found quite demanding, and in the new year we will embark on T S Eliot, leavening the more serious poems with a look at some of his Practical Cats.
In the past we have ranged over Shakespeare’s sonnets; John Donne, the Elizabethan metaphysical poet; Wordsworth; Thomas Hardy; Ted Hughes, Simon Armitage, Carol Ann Duffy; and in some years used an anthology with selections from widely different periods and cultures based on a variety of listed topics. Occasionally we get creative and write our own poems!
Our discussions are not too academic. We may examine some of the poem’s techniques but also enjoy reflecting on and sharing our own experiences and memories which relate to the poems we are reading.
