WALKING

Walking group 1 - Meet the 2nd Thursday of each month (except August)
This group traditionally did walks of approximately 5 miles but the longer and more challenging walks have proved to be much less popular with members over recent year.So the decision has been taken to reduce the distance for this walking group. From now on, the walks will be approximately 3 miles. Depending on the feedback from members longer walks may well be included in future programs.

Walking group 2 - Meet the 4th Thursday of each month (except August)
Walks are up to about three miles and are proving popular with members who prefer a more relaxed pace and easier going. Leaders often plan their walks with the opportunity for a mid way refreshment stop.

Walking group 3 - meet the 3rd Thursday of each month (except August)
This walking group is about having an enjoyable day out that includes a walk. The day is planned around visiting a place of interest. Often starting with a coffee, a walk of about three mile followed by lunch (pub, National Trust cafe or similar), and then another short walk in the afternoon. The day starts at a given meeting point at 10.30am and aim to be finishing by about 3.pm. Previously the group has visited Cliveden, Hatchlands, Farnham Castle and Waverley Abbey, Polesden Lacey and Painshill Gardens.

To limit cost we try to share transport where possible .

All three groups are open to all members but it is up to the individual member to satisfy themselves that they are fit enough for the walks they choose to join. Group sizes are not currently restricted, so do come and join us!

Registering as a Walking Group member allows the member to partake in walks with any of the three groups.
Before members walk with the group for the first time they will be supplied with details of the U3A's policy on insurance Disclaimer and will be required to sign that they understand and agree to the conditions.

The U3A is a self help organisation and does rely on members being prepared to assist in the organising of walks. The groups are always extremely grateful to those members who offer to lead walks. Planning a walk usually proves both informative and enjoyable. Previously the groups have walked along riverbanks and towpaths, across Chobham Common, visited Hampton Court, Woking Palace and the Magna Carta sites at Runnymede.

Groups do not allow the weather to put them off - come rain, wind or sun nothing deters them– waterproofs are hastily donned and off they go – please don’t let the weather put you off – come and join your fellow U3A members and enjoy the exercise and getting to know Surrey!

ALL WALKERS MUST NOTE THAT THEY:-

  • Take part entirely at their own risk.
  • Are required to supply their Membership No. and to complete a Disclaimer Form.
  • Must provide an emergency contact telephone number

Please also note:
It is strongly recommended that members wear suitable footwear, especially in winter. A walking stick(s) may prove helpful.
In warm/hot weather walkers should have an adequate supply of drinking water.
Many walks finish near pubs/eating places so that walkers can enjoy refreshments in good company.
Please check with each walk leader if you wish to bring a dog, which must be kept under strict control and on a lead.
Suggestions and offers to lead walks are always welcome. There are walk books to borrow, and help for those who would like to lead a walk.
