*** CANCELLATION OF ALL ROTHERHAM U3A MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES ***
The Rotherham U3A Trustees regretfully decided at their meeting this morning, 17 March 2020, that due to the unprecedented and extraordinary situation imposed by the current Covid-19 pandemic all Rotherham U3A activity WILL CEASE WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Sadly this action will affect all RU3A members, meetings and gatherings. We hope that all RU3A members and their loved ones stay safe and well and that the coming weeks are not too onerous.

MESSAGE FROM THE TRUSTEES, MAY 2020

It is hard to believe that we are already in May 2020. We hope that you and your family and friends are safe and well as we enter the second month of the 'lock down' due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Trustees held their first virtual meeting on Zoom on 19 May. This was very successful and their next meeting will be on Friday 12 June. More information will be available for members after this meeting.

It is heartening to hear how groups are keeping in contact and keeping friendships active in the weeks ahead. These are some of the ways groups are doing this:

• The Monday afternoon French group are busy growing their online Zoom meetings to share language learning tasks, whilst other language groups (French, Italian and German) are sharing learning resources, online and by phone.

• Singing For Fun is also now a 'Zoom Group', Tricia Macreadie initially supported Denise to get the Zoom group going and now the group can enjoy singing together again.

• The Photography Group are busy reviewing their work and undertaking new projects.

• The Card-making, Flexercise and Creative Writing Groups are making sure there is regular contact with members by phone until the group can meet again.

Tricia Macreadie continues to write articles for local publications. The May article for Rotherham Life is already available on the Groups page of the website - and look out also for the June article, when a poem by Trevor Golding will feature.

Rotherham U3A website is being updated regularly. Rosalind Duckmanton recommends that members keep checking the Group and Events pages for the latest news. The recent 'Rotherham Life' articles have been added and Rosalind recommends the Photography pages, also with updates. There is also an information pack on Covid-19 provided by AGE UK.

RU3A members are keeping active and energised even if the days are sometimes a little hazy or challenging, the commitment to 'Learn, Laugh, Live' is evident, strong and thriving in Rotherham.

If you have any news about your group please contact Tricia or Rosalind so that it can be shared and celebrated either on the website or in one of the publicity articles.

The National U3A website (https://www.u3a.org.uk) has also been updated to promote well-being amongst U3A groups and members during this time. You will find new articles on Mindfulness, Exercise - Mr Motivator!, links to the U3A Youtube channel, ideas for continued learning, maths challenges and much more. It is well worth having a look.

The Rotherham U3A Trustees send you warm regards and hope that you keep as safe and well as possible in the days ahead.

CHRISTINE FIRTH

We are all very sad to learn that on Sunday 5 April, Christine Firth passed away. Christine was a member of Rotherham U3A and a former Observer at Trustees' meetings. She finally lost her long and hard-fought battle with cancer and we send our deepest sympathy to her family. Please see the link on this page 'Obituary for Christine Firth' as we pay our tributes to her.

STROLLERS - Co-ordinator Margaret Tupling

Due to the Covid-19 crisis the Strollers walks are CANCELLED until further notice.

(The Strollers walk every alternate Saturday, mostly in and around Rotherham with the occasional venture into parts of Barnsley, Sheffield and even the Peak District. It never ceases to amaze us that we have such lovely countryside and parkland on our doorstep with pretty villages such as Whiston, Laughton and Wentworth, woodland in Wickersley, Treeton and Scholes, waterside walks at Old Moor Wetlands, Ulley and Rother Valley Country Park, even a swannery and boatyard near the town centre. Generally we use buses to the start and return from each walk. Please see the Events listed below and the Strollers group page for more information.

It has been good to welcome several new members to the Strollers in recent weeks, most of whom are already U3A members. We had a record number on our recent canal-side walk which was easy, level and included a first ride for many on the Tram Train! The downside is that I now feel obliged to to re-open the waiting list. Could members unable to join the walks please let me know so I can offer their places to someone else. Please ring on 01709 371949, with thanks Margaret Tupling.)
