DEATH OF ANN HARTLEY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2021
It is with great sadness and shock that we have to inform our members that Ann Hartley passed away this morning, Sunday 19 September. Ann had been a stalwart of Rotherham u3a, holding the Membership Secretary post for many years and being an active member of several groups. Ann was a true friend to many, always greeting everyone with a big smile and a welcoming word. Her passing is a big loss to Rotherham u3a and she will be greatly missed.
*** WELCOME BACK - RE-OPENING OF ROTHERHAM U3A MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES SEPTEMBER 2021 ***
Message from Rotherham U3A Trustees: WELCOME BACK. Most groups are now restarting this month with some groups in October and hopefully one group after Christmas. Groups are restarting safely and adopting covid-safe precautions. The Trustees send you our good wishes and are cautiously optimistic as we are able to meet with our group friends again. It has been a long time!
The ROTHERHAM u3a ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING will be held on 27 September from 12 noon - 1 pm at Herringthorpe United Reform Church. See below for full details.
WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE, PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT YOUR u3a. Keep safe and well.
MEETING OF GARDENING AND OUT AND ABOUT GROUP MEMBERS
FRIDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2021 FROM 2 – 3 PM AT HURC
A meeting was called by Lesley White, Chair of Trustees, and Rosalind Duckmanton and Sylvia Duncan, Trustees, for all members of the Gardening and Out and About groups. As both groups no longer have Co-ordinators, with Martin having moved away and Barbara stepping down, the Trustees were keen to meet with members to see a way forward to keeping the groups going. We are pleased to say that, after full discussion, a team of 4 members have offered to share the work and hopefully run a visit next April for the combined groups. Members will be informed of further information when known. The contact person for the team is Keith Smith (tel 431151).

UPDATE FROM ROTHERHAM MBC 17 September 2021
Boosters for people aged 50+ and 12-15s to be offered jab: the Government announced the Autumn/Winter Covid plan this week, which includes an extension of the current vaccination programme, starting next week. People aged 50+, care home residents, frontline health workers and those classed as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable who have already had two doses of vaccine will begin to be called for ‘booster’ jabs. First and second doses of vaccines are still available for anyone eligible who is yet to take them up.
The NHS will contact people directly to let them know when it is their turn to get their booster vaccine. Please wait until you are contacted.
Vaccinating against flu is also a priority across Rotherham and many thousands of eligible people have already been invited for their jabs to help protect them against winter illness.
The Covid infection rate in Rotherham has fallen this week, but still remains above the national average - and the borough currently has the 28th highest rate in England. The latest 7-day rate is 411 per 100,000, down from 464.9 cases per 100,000 on the previous week. The national average currently stands at 297.2 per 100,000.
Sadly, there were a further eight Covid related deaths in Rotherham this week, bringing the total number of residents lost to the virus to 863 since the start of the pandemic.
Please continue to play your part in reducing the spread of the virus by observing social distancing, wearing face coverings when appropriate and washing your hands regularly.
Rotherham Hospital Update
On Wednesday 15 September, there were 57 inpatients in Rotherham Hospital who had tested positive for COVID-19, of which 2 were in critical care. Although these figures are still very high, thankfully it is a reduction from the number of both inpatients and critical care cases reported last week. Since the start of the pandemic, Rotherham Hospital has now treated more than 3,000 people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

UPDATE FROM ROTHERHAM u3a TRUSTEES 30 July 2021
Warmest good wishes to all our members and our grateful thanks to Co-ordinators as always from the Ru3a Trustees. The Trustees held their monthly meeting by Zoom on Tuesday 27 July 2021 and we would like to give you the following important information:
We look forward with both enthusiasm and caution as many Ru3a groups prepare to open in September 2021. Outdoor groups such as Walking Cricket, Grow Your Own and Strollers have been very active and 'Singles on Sunday' have held their first Covid-safe gathering - enjoyed by all. Singing for Fun, French and German have been busy throughout the year on Zoom.
The Trustees agreed to adopt a 'Self Safety Check' for members attending the Members'/Coordinators' Meeting in August and the Ru3a AGM in September. This check has been used by the 'Walking Cricket Group' throughout the Summer and the Trustees recommend Co-ordinators to use this for their meetings.
Please undertake the Ru3a 'health check' before attending the Ru3a Members' Meeting. Thank you.

MESSAGE FROM THE THIRD AGE TRUST JULY 2021: Be Alert About Phishing and Other Scams
The Third Age Trust wants to share with you information about the latest scams. Below are two experiences from u3a members who contacted us to share with other u3as.
A u3a member got in touch with us to tell us she had received a phishing email supposedly from Norton, an anti virus software company, about payment to renew an account she does not have. It says that they will deduct over £220 unless she cancels within 48 hours. If you receive an email like this, please don't click on the links and please take independent advice before paying any unexpected requests for money.
Another u3a member got in touch to tell us about a company who had taken extra money out of her bank account without her knowledge. The company involved specialises in products aimed at older adults. She contacted the bank who stopped any further charges on the card from the company and gave advice on what to do next, eventually the company paid back the money.
We encourage u3a members to check their bank accounts regularly and immediately report any suspicious debits that they do not recognise. Most banks are able to put a stop to any charges and give advice on how to get refunds where appropriate.
Another good practice is to search for reviews and credit ratings before buying from a new company.
Ru3a WEBSITE AND PUBLICITY
PLEASE KEEP CHECKING OUR Ru3a WEBSITE - this is updated constantly with useful information and news - a great way to be connected/updated.
Regarding publicity, you will see articles in various local publications, such as Rotherham Life, to keep Ru3a in the public eye. Look out for these.
