Chepstow Castle and the lower limestone gorge.
Meet at Larrapurz 10:30
As you may know this is the 250th anniversary of the Romantic Movement, Wye Tour inaugurated by William Gilpin in 1770. I think that it will be an interesting idea to make his Wye Valley route our theme for geology and landscape trips during the year. I am planning accordingly and would be very pleased to receive any suggestions which would fall in with this plan. Instead of touring down the Wye, I propose that we reverse the direction and work our way upstream from the confluence of Wye and Severn.
Tentatively therefore , I suggestion the following programme:
February 5th : Beachley Point -Triassic geology and Carboniferous fossils
March 4th: Chepstow Castle -Late carboniferous limestones and the lower gorge
April 1st: Angidy Valley (Tintern) – an excursion into medieval industrial archaeology
May 6th: Lower Lydbrook for Coldwell Cliffs – Early carboniferous limestones and the upper gorges.
June 3rd: Huntsham Hill (Nr Goodrich) – Quartz conglomerate
July 1st: Mordiford – Redbank Cliffs (Holme Lacey) – Late Silurian (red) mudstones and the Wye meanders
That takes us half way through the year but there may well be some “slippage” due to bad weather. Or may allow for some additions from any suggestions you can make.
