Philosophy
We meet once a month on the 1st Tuesday afternoon at the Larruperz. The group relies on members being willing to spend some time researching and then giving presentations on topics of their own choice.
The group which has 17 members has continued to meander across a wide spectrum of issues. Recently we have looked at religion and considered what makes us human – what is the nature of man - and looked at various philosophers such as Plato, Kant, Nietzsche, Sartre. We have also looked at Singer, animal rights and the nature of consciousness and whether a robot could be conscious. In the last year we have branched out a bit with topics such as Beauty, Time, Taoism and Confucianism, Free-will and capital punishment. Furthermore, various members of the group have taken up the gauntlet and presented topics. We have plenty of members at present, but numbers can vary so contact Brian King, if interested.
Next year (2024) we plan to have talks and discussion on the following topics : Karl Popper, Singer and Animal Rights, AI/Transhumanism, Objective v Subjective in Ethics, Euthanasia, Buddhism, Language, Plato (again). We are continually open to new ideas for discussions
