Welcome to the Roding Valley U3A
Our u3a is one of over 1000 u3as in the UK and you an find out more about the movement here by (logging on to the u3A National website the website address is - www.u3a.org.uk).
Members can join events organised by the National u3a, the East of England region, and the Essex Association of u3as. In addition you can read about them here.
Roding Valley u3a was inaugurated in May 2004 and now with a membership of over 500. We are situated in West Essex, close to the towns of Loughton, Chigwell, Theydon Bois and to the Historic Town of Epping - we are also near Epping Forest.
The University of the Third Age, U3A, is a world-wide organisation of people who are either retired or no longer in full-time employment but who want to continue to learn and socialise in the company of others. No formal qualifications are required, nor are any awarded. All that is needed is a willingness to share one’s knowledge and to learn from others.
Interest/study Groups are organised by members. They vary in size and meet by kind permission in members’ homes, or outside venues, often Theydon Bois Village Hall. These groups form the basis of any U3A.
On the 3rd Monday of each month there is a meeting at Theydon Bois Village Hall at 10.00am with an invited Speaker - this lasts for about an hour and is open to all members. The talks are varied, often illustrated, and are chosen to reflect different tastes and interests. Invariably there is something for everyone. Details of upcoming Monday meetings can be found on the Events page._ Currently, we cannot meet, they are being held online by Zoom.
A monthly News Bulletin keeps members up to date with outings, theatre visits, social events and group news; which are currently unavailable.
All members receive a copy of the national magazine "U3A NEWS" through the post. Roding Valley members are also able to participate in any of the events put on by National and details of them can be found on their website - information about some of these events can also be found on our "Events"# page
IMPORTANT NOTICE CONCERNING GROUP MEETINGS, MONTHLY MEETINGS AND MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS DURING THE CORONAVIRUS SITUATION AS AT 22nd August 2021
PLEASE NOTE - - SOME GROUP PAGES HAVE BEEN UPDATED, BUT THOSE THAT HAVE NOT, THE ABOVE PARAGRAPH APPLIES TO ALL GROUPS THAT MEET IN MEMBERS HOUSES OR AT OTHER VENUES.
THIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY APPLY TO GROUPS THAT MEET OUTDOORS.
Please note that due to the present Covid 19 situation, all regular Monthly meetings in the Hall with talks, group meetings in Members homes or in other locations such as outings have been cancelled until further notice.
However, there may be some easing of restrictions as from 21st August 2021
The signs are good that we will be able to to start our monthly meetings back in the Village Hall from the 3rd Monday in September. The Epping Forest u3a held their first talk at the Village Hall and had an attendance of over 100. They do have a larger membership than our u3a (nearer 700), but hopefully we will have a good response at At out first talk we will look forward to seeing you there.
In October we will be holding our AGM and you may remember that our quorum is near 70.
Some of our Groups, are able to meet, these are the walking groups where social distancing is not a problem. However, if you are interested in joining any group then please use the contact page to ascertain if or if not that group is having meetings.
We can have meals in restaurants providing there are no more than 6 in the group. However, Groups that meet in members homes and planned outings as stated above cannot meet, and will not do so until the Covid situation changes.
Some of our groups have discovered some new and innovative ways to continue contact and activity during this period, including on-line activities. Our Practical Art for example use a group What's App to send messages and pictures to keep in contact with their members to show they are not forgotten. Keeping in contact is very important in this period of self-isolation.
We will continue to monitor the situation and will operate a full programme when it is safe to do so. This website will be updated when a clearer picture emerges and when have information that will allow us inform members that our activities will resume.
There is more detail on the From the Chairman page on this website,
We hope that we can resume our activities in the not too distant future. When we do this page will be updated.
In the meantime we send our good wishes and hope that you are keeping safe and well.
As we will it seems that we will be meeting from September, then if you are interested in joining our U3A as a member please visit our contact page. Then all you need to do is send us a message giving your details and a membership form will be posted to you.
