E-Bulletin No 18 (February 2020)

• We have just started two new groups – Newsround and Beginners Spanish. Both groups are looking for more members. If you wish to know more please visit our GROUPS page where you can select the group you are interested in and also contact the convenor of each group. We now have 17 different interest groups.

• We do need more volunteers to join our committee. Deirdre Booth has kindly agreed to join us, but we still have several vacancies. Detailed job descriptions of all committee members are on the web or you could initially join us without any specific responsibility. Please do think about this.

• The Summer 2020 Newsletter is due for publication on 6 April 2020. Please do let Jon have any contributions by no later than 9 March 2020. Convenors are reminded that this is the medium for you to let members know what is happening in your activity group. There will only be a brief report on activity groups at the AGM.

Annual General Meeting – Wednesday 13th May 2020 in the Village Hall starting at 1030 am. This is your opportunity to influence what we do and to meet other members. Please let our Secretary, Kay, know if you wish to raise anything at the meeting. Refreshments will be available from the “Coffee Break” in the Rogers Room.

National U3A Day & 30th Anniversary – Wednesday 3 June 2020. We are still looking for ideas to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. Please do speak to a committee member before our next committee meeting in early March 2020. We cannot let this occasion slip by without a suitable celebration.

Open Day – Wednesday 12 August 2020 from 10 am to noon. Further details will be in our next Summer 2020 Newsletter.

E-Bulletin No 17 (October 2019)

New “What the Papers Say” Group:

We have several members that would like to start a second “What the Papers Say” Group and one member has kindly agreed to act as convenor. We plan to hold an inaugural meeting at 10 am on Monday 28 October 2019. The meeting will discuss when the most convenient day and time is to meet and roughly how the group will operate. Any member that wishes to attend this meeting should contact Vice Chairman Ian for further details. Contact details are on our website.

New “Beginners Spanish” Group for Beginners:

We are also considering the possibility of starting up a self-help Spanish Group for beginners. We have a Convenor for this new Group and Conchita, Convenor of the current Spanish Group, has kindly agreed to help out. Any members interested in joining such a group should contact Vice Chairman Ian as soon as possible. An inaugural meeting would be held before Christmas with the idea of the group meeting in the New Year.

Your Committee met recently. We agreed some amendments to our Governance Procedures and Practices and the revised document is on our website. Ken reported that we now have 170 members and only 4 do not have email addresses. Sylvia reported that the finances are in a healthy state. We still have no Chairman, Committee Secretary, New Group Co-ordinator or someone dealing with publicity. Please consider volunteering to help out on the committee. You can contact the Vice Chairman anytime if you want to know more about serving on the committee.

Our Website

Our website is getting more and more visits. Please look at it regularly to keep up to date and to contact committee members and convenors. Just search “Ringmer U3A” and go to our contacts page. Keith and Martin are doing a sterling job keeping it going.

E-Bulletin No 15 (October 2018)

Interest Groups: Unfortunately, 2 of the French Groups, the Theatre Club, Scrabble and the Readers Circle have now ceased to exist. We do hope to get the Poetry group going again and Sylvia is working on this. We have though managed to start another knitting group and full details on this and the Poetry group will be given in the next Newsletter. Our overall number (169) this year has dropped a little, but we still have a healthy membership and number of groups.

Short Walks Group: From November the pattern of walks will be changing to the Second Monday of each month at 10.15am and the Fourth Thursday of each month at 2.30pm. Walks start from the Doctors' Surgery Car Park in Anchor Field.

Membership Details: We are now using the U3A Beacon system to store all our membership records. This is a secure and efficient means of managing our day-to-day business and it enables us to comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Committee members and Convenors will use this to communicate with members and training has already commenced for those involved. In the light of this change we do not plan to issue individual membership cards, except to those not on email. Those on email should have received an email confirming their membership for this year.

Website: Details of all our activities and contacts are now available on our website. Please do make use of this as it is the easiest way of getting up to date information.

Spring 2019 Newsletter: Pictures and articles for the next newsletter should be with Jon Elphick by no later than Friday 23 November 2018. We plan to publish this newsletter on our website on Monday 10 December. Copies of recent newsletters are also available on the website.

SUN Study Days: Details of 3 study days have been received. Information is on their web site (https://u3asites.org.uk/sussexu3anetwork/ events ), but Ian also has some flyers. They are:

  • Aspects of the Sussex Coast at Pulborough on 8 December 2018.
  • Art: Masters of the Northern Renaissance at Hailsham on 12 January 2019.
  • Medieval Life through Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales at Crowborough on 9 February 2019.

Projector: Your committee recently purchased a projector for use at U3A meetings. It is primarily for use in the Scout Hall or Village Hall. Further details can be obtained from Ian or Keith.
