19th and 20th CENTURY HISTORY
Meeting: 3rd Friday at 10 am
Venue: Private House
Study Group Leader: Andrew Hicks
Vacancies
The Group currently has 15 members. We usually have around 10-12 at each meeting. New members are always welcome.
The Group meets on the second Friday of each month although we remain flexible to suit the calendars of our occasional guest speakers. Having followed the timeline of major events from Napoleon through to the origins of the Cold War, we are now regressing to look at specific events, developments and characters together with more of the social aspects of the period.
In the December meeting, Bill Fraser gave us an excellent, illustrated presentation on the “Decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918”. In January, Andrew Hicks informed the group about the first attempt to establish a forum to deliver world peace in his talk on “The League of Nations”. In March, Martin Lunnon presented the excellent, first part of his two-part appreciation of the “Life and Works of Winston Churchill”. We look forward to the second part and Churchill’s re-emergence from the wilderness later in the year.
In April, Elaine Cole will talk to us about women’s suffrage and the changing role of women in society through the two centuries. In May, Andrew Hicks will give an appreciation of the life and work of the much-maligned, Neville Chamberlain.
