Against a backdrop of a century of turmoil, war and revolution, the 19th century was the most spectacular and interesting period of French Painting covering the Neo-Classical artists such as David and Gericault, the History and Romantic painters such as Delacroix and Delaroche, the Barbizon School such as Corot and Courbet, the Symbolists such as Puvis de Chavannes and above all the Impressionists and Post Impressionists and we shall look at their influence on painting thereafter.
