Geology Outdoor Sessions and Talks
November 2020 – November 2021
I am Hilary Edgeley and am a member of the Malvern U3A Geology Group. For the past six years I have been a member of their steering committee, with the enjoyable task of preparing and delivering walks and talks for the annual cohort of new members.
I have organised, and will be leading, two outdoor and two indoor sessions for your group. The dates are as follows:
Wednesday, 18th, November, 2020. The Building Stones of Worcester. (Walk).
Friday, 15th, October, 2021. (Talk 1).
Friday, 19th, November, 2021. (Talk 2).
Tuesday, 23rd, November, 2021. Whitman’s Hill Quarry. (Walk).
It is intended that the two outdoor events will not only enable you to see rocks in their natural setting and their interpretation within the landscape, but also the use of rocks for building materials.
Wednesday, 18th, November, 2020.
Walk around the Building Stones of Worcester.
Meet outside Worcester Guildhall at 10:30am. The tour will last approximately 2 hours and will conclude in Worcester Cathedral. During the tour we shall see many local building materials as well as stone imported from further afield.
Wear: comfortable footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing. We shall be walking on pavements for the whole tour.
Bring: a hand lens (if you have one).
Participants may wish to arrange car sharing to Worcester.
Tuesday, 23rd, November, 2021.
Whitman’s Hill Quarry, Storridge.
It is hoped that there will be a short talk as we congregate, before setting off for a foray in the quarry to look for fossils in Silurian Limestone.
Meet at 10:30am at Storridge Community Hall car park. WR13 5EY. Storridge is at the north end of the Malvern Hills. Facilities are available in the village hall.
Car sharing is requested. The village hall car park is small and will already be being used by a group meeting in the hall.
Wear: walking boots and appropriate outdoor clothing. We shall be walking a short distance up a track to the quarry. The quarry has a track, but for those who wish to wander off the path, rough ground should be expected.
Bring: (only if you have them) – hand lens, hard hat, high viz. jacket and trekking poles if you usually use them.
Hard hats and high viz. jackets may be supplied if you do not have your own.
Booking is essential as places for outdoor activities are limited to 15 for Worcester and 20 for Whitman’s Hill Quarry.
