Meet the Committee
This is how the Committee members present themselves:
Liz Kite, Chairman
I joined the Committee as assistant tea maker but had to take over the role of Groups Co-ordinator soon afterwards, a role I enjoyed very much for many years. I stood down from that role to become Vice Chair. I also serve as a delegate to the London Region of U3A's.
Lennart Christensen, Vice Chairman and Editor of website & Noticeboard
I have been a member of the U3A for a few years now. When I joined the Committee I was given the job of editing and producing our magazine, Noticeboard. The Redbridge & District U3A website and a newsletter has since been added to my portfolio. I have also taken up arranging London Theatre Visits, and I serve as a delegate to the London Region of U3A's. My background is in journalism and media monitoring, but I finally retired from my working life in 2017.
Cliff Russell, Treasurer
I am a retired Accountant who worked mostly in industry. I have been a member of U3A for several years and belong to a Bridge Group as well as Great Novels Group and take part in Local Walks. U3A has widened my horizons, so I was happy to be asked to join the Committee after setting up the Gift Aid scheme for the branch. I trust I will enjoy continuing as Treasurer.
Susan Whiterow, Secretary
I became a member of the U3A following my retirement as a Senior Administrative Officer with a Local Authority a few years ago. Since joining I have learnt to play Bridge, enjoyed Line Dancing, Tai Chi and currently Yoga, plus taking an active part in the Patchwork and Embroidery Group. I anticipate enjoying other groups within the U3A as time goes on. I look forward to being able to continue to contribute towards the running of our U3A as Secretary.
Stuart Wallman, Membership Secretary
I have recently joined U3A after retiring some 5 years ago.
I used to work as an analytical chemist in laboratories and then as salesman for analytical test equipment used by research and quality control. I have now served as membership secretary for the past year and have enjoyed being a member of the current committee.
Maureen Nieberg, Membership Support
I joined the U3A after retirement as an administrator for a large Central London complex where I wqas involved with all aspects pertaining to the membership, be it ensuring membership fees were paid, helping to arrange events and ensuring the everyday smooth running of the complex. I belong to several U3A groups which I thoroughly enjoy and help my husband with the running of the group that he leads.
Rikki Wallman, Groups Co-ordinator
After leaving university I worked as a unit trust dealer for a major merchant banker in the City of London, a very male dominated world then.
Since returning to work post children I went into the retail world and have worked for many companies in the beauty industry, including being manager of a store with 3 therapy rooms and over 20 temperamental therapists.
I retired from full time employment 5 years ago but continued on a part time basis. However I decided enough was enough and I need some more "me" time. So I left work and joined Redbridge U3A where I have been the group coordinator for the past year.
My passions are travelling to learn about different cultures, actively keeping fit and healthy, theatre and learning new skills, in general anything to keep the brain cells working.
Jill Playford, Minutes Secretary
I have been a member of the U3A for four years now and have been leading the Psychology groups for just over two years. I joined the Committee in 2015 and was the Membership Secretary for the last two years. I enjoy all the groups I attend and learn so much from fellow members. My working life was spent in educational settings, latterly with students with additional learning needs. My hobbies include watching competitive sports, especially athletics, charity fundraising and travelling.
Loretta Mather, Publicity
I have recently retired as a Learning Support Assistant at a local Primary School. Since joining the U3A I have enjoyed local and London walks. I also do voluntary work for Norwood and help children with reading at Roy Lodge Primary
Nicholas Levin, Speakers Organiser
I became a member of U3A after retiring from 30 years Practice as a Property Lawyer. I am a keen traveller and linguist and lead the Getting Around In France and Italy language groups. I was recently co-opted onto the Committee and look forward to contributing to its running as Speaker Organiser.
Jan Martin-Ellis, Publicity
I joined the U3A very soon after retirement and started attending a variety of groups. I found a very warm welcome from everyone I met and have made many new friends. As a Committee member I can give something back and look forward to being an even more active member of our Redbridge branch
Andrea Yeshin, New Members Support
I retired from a market research company and joined the U3A sometime later. I was able to join several groups and made new friends. I am now helping new members by advising them about joining new groups, which I thoroughly enjoy. My other hobbies include reading, walking, music and the theatre.
