Meet the Committee
This is how the Committee members present themselves:
Paula Russell, Chairman
I am a retired primary school Teacher who worked for the Redbridge LA for 30 years. I have run one of the Poetry Groups for 18 years. I also go to Great Novels Group and have been on holiday with the U3A. I have been Chairman from 2001 to 2004, 2008 to 2010 and again 2013/14.
Lennart Christensen, Vice Chairman
I have been a member of the U3A for a few years now, and since joining the Committee I have been editing and laying out “Noticeboard” and more recently our website as well. This year I have taken up arranging London Theatre Visits. My background is in journalism and media monitoring, but I have finally retired from my working life.
Cliff Russell, Treasurer
I am a retired Accountant who worked mostly in industry. I have been a member of U3A for several years and belong to a Bridge Group as well as Great Novels Group and take part in Local Walks. U3A has widened my horizons, so I was happy to be asked to join the Committee after setting up the Gift Aid scheme for the branch. I trust I will enjoy continuing as Treasurer.
Susan Whiterow, Secretary
I became a member of the U3A following my retirement as a Senior Administrative Officer with a Local Authority a few years ago. Since joining I have learnt to play Bridge, enjoyed Line Dancing and Tai Chi and taken an active part in the Patchwork and Embroidery Group and anticipate joining other groups within the U3A as time goes on. The U3A has opened different horizons for me and I have a lot to thank the organisation for. I look forward to being able to contribute towards the running of our U3A as Secretary.
Jill Playford, Membership Secretary
I have been a member of the U3A for four years now and have been leading the Psychology groups for just over two years. I joined the Committee in 2015 and am now the Membership Secretary. I enjoy all the groups I attend and learn so much from fellow members. My working life was spent in educational settings, latterly with students with additional learning needs. My hobbies include watching competitive sports, especially athletics, charity fundraising and travelling.
Liz Kite, Groups Co-ordinator
I joined the Committee as Assistant Tea Lady, then was Groups Co-ordinator for nearly seven years and after a brief spell as Chair I am now back in my favourite job. The more I have to do with U3A, the more I love the way it keeps us all physically and mentally active, and most importantly, opens pathways to new friendships. It is a wonderful organisation that I enjoy helping to prosper.
I recently retired from my working life. I have had a variety of jobs spanning 40yrs - 25yrs NHS lab, 22yrs head teacher/religion school teacher, I am a qualified holistic therapist & the last 8 years House Manager for JBD sheltered housing. I have volunteered myself to arrange outings, I look forward to this challenge.
I have recently retired as a Learning Support Assistant at a local Primary School. Since joining the U3A I have enjoyed local and London walks. I also do voluntary work for Norwood and help children with reading at Roy Lodge Primary
I became a member of U3A after retiring from 30 years Practice as a Property Lawyer. I am a keen traveller and linguist and lead the Getting Around In France and Italy language groups. I was recently co-opted onto the Committee and look forward to contributing to its running as Speaker Organiser.
I joined the U3A after retirement as an administrator for a large Central London complex where I wqas involved with all aspects pertaining to the membership, be it ensuring membership fees were paid, helping to arrange events and ensuring the everyday smooth running of the complex. I belong to several U3A groups which I thoroughly enjoy and help my husband with the running of the group that he leads.
After leaving university I worked as a unit trust dealer for a major merchant banker in the City of London, a very male dominated world then.
Since returning to work post children I went into the retail world and have worked for many companies in the beauty industry, including being manager of a store with 3 therapy rooms and over 20 temperamental therapists.
I retired from full time employment 4 years ago but continued on a part time basis. However I decided enough was enough and I need some more "me" time. So I left work and joined Redbridge U3A.
My passions are travelling to learn about different cultures, actively keeping fit and healthy, theatre and learning new skills, in general anything to keep the brain cells working.
I have recently joined U3A after retiring some 5 years ago.
I used to work as an analytical chemist in laboratories and then as salesman for analytical test equipment used by research and quality control. As a new member of the committee I hope to be able to help where I am able.
