Dates for your Diary
Meetings
Wed May 15th Maps can you trust them - Chris Little.
Wed Jun 19th Miss Savidge moves home - Christine Adams. In 2007 Christine Adams went to the BBC's Antiques Roadshow in Norfolk with memorabilia from the house of her aunt May Savidge. But this was only a tiny fraction of the house's contents and only hinted at the facts of May Savidge's life. This story will appeal to those who still believe that the Englishman's home is his castle and to those who have a soft spot for indomitable old women.
Wed Jul 17th Sheep Across London Bridge - Murray Craig - who is the Clerk of the Chamberlain's Court and will talk on the City Freedom, an institution which goes back to the early 13th century. Until the 19th Century one needed to be Free of the City, via a Livery Company or Guild, in order to trade within the Square Mile.
Wed Aug 21st Smoke Steam and Soot - David Burnell - a talk on the very early days of the Underground - a general history of the early days with some humour

At the start of the Great War in August 1914, Lady Pamela Lytton of Knebworth House opened and ran a Red Cross hospital for wounded soldiers in London, At this time Knebworth House was being regularly rented out so the Lytton family were mostly based in London. One of the first hospitals of its kind to be opened Pamela ran it from 1914 to its closure in 1919. This talk gives details of the research carried out on the hospital using the Lytton family archives.
