Arts and Crafts
The group meets in Canewdon, if possible on the last Friday of the month at 1-30pm to 4-30pm.
The normal practice is to have tea and biscuits as we watch a DVD on the subject of the day or sometimes we have a visiting Artist to guide us.
We all paint in different ways.
WATERCOLOUR on paper (the most difficult as you only have one “go”)
GOUCHE on paper like watercolour + a opaque binder which makes it easy to use by painting one colour over another.
ACRYLIC on paper/canvas or any surface, easy, plenty of pigment, you can use it like watercolour or oil. Quick drying, keep it off your clothes.
OIL slow drying takes days/weeks can smell but is the classic method.
DRAWING with pencils or pastels. We can take the drawing process away if required by using tracing paper/”tracedown” graphite paper / or using your computer /copier to enlarge the photo to the size you need for your picture.
In summer we try to go some outside for our painting (take some photos to help...... before if possible for tracing.)
We try to have a good time with plenty of laughter and not taking art too seriously. The Group has about 10 members and is FULL. If they all come I would not have enough table space for all the equipment/kit.
We try to get people out of their comfort zone, to try new subjects, media & technique’s, you can do anything with the help of your U3A friends!.
It would be nice if we could start another group another Group. I will help in any way possible.
If you would like more information of starting another Art Group please email the Group Coordinator on the Contact page

In answer to popular demand we have decided to start a new group, Textiles Two and we are now able to welcome new members. We intend to run the new group on the same days, 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, from 10.30 am – 12.20 pm. We will meet at the St Andrews Church Hall in Ashingdon.
Anyone who is interested in all types of sewing, knitting, embroidery, making friends and enjoying cream teas is welcome to come along to see if they like what we do. All abilities are welcome as we learn from each other, following a programme or simply doing whatever it is we like best. Don’t be put off if you have never sewn before, you will soon be surprising yourself at what you can achieve. If you are interested please contact your Groups Co-ordinator, who will put you in touch with us – we look forward to hearing from you!
