Europe: into the 20th Century
THIS GROUP IS RUN BY WATFORD AND DISTRICT U3A Radlett & District U3A members have been invited to join.
Do you look back on the 1900s with a degree of nostalgia? Have an interest in exploring how Europe has arrived at its current position? Or perhaps have a particular aspect which you would like to pursue? If any of these apply, this could be the group for you. We aim to explore a variety of aspects of European culture, science and society during the last century, one which saw much change, innovation and many momentous events – and a century of which we all have personal experience. In fact variety is our keyword: over the past 18 months we have covered a wide range of topics, from classical ballet, through the history of weather forecasting, women’s suffrage, transport , early cinema and the Jewish immigration to name but a few, to our last meeting when we were entertained with songs from the first half of the century chosen by our members. As you can see, we aim to inject some more light-hearted topics into the mix but welcome anything from the serious to the quirky – from Freud to food! We have a varied format to our meetings too, with some short talks, films, TV recordings and visiting speakers on occasion. Members are encouraged to contribute but don’t worry, there is no pressure to produce a lengthy Powerpoint presentation – although if you would like to, that would be very welcome too!
The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month, 10.00-12.00 in the Oak Room at the Stanborough Centre on St. Alban’s Road. If you would like any more information please contact Jo Davison (SGL), firstname.lastname@example.org or text/call 07808 069036.
