Have you ever wondered why there are huge formations of gulls flying over Radlett at dusk and where
are they going?
Well, the Radlett u3a Wildlife Group went to find out.
Josh Kalms of the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Group met us at Hilfield Reservoir, off Hilfield Lane near Patchetts Green where we had a joint Wildlife u3a Group outing with members of the Bushey u3a.
Despite the ‘Arctic’ weather conditions and strong wind, we walked round the reservoir looking at the many varieties of ducks such as tufted, mallards and great grebes. We survived the very muddy terrain and arrived back at our starting point on the reservoir bank as the gulls started to arrive in their hundreds from all over South Hertfordshire. We were told that in winter Hilfield Reservoir boasts the largest gull roost in Hertfordshire. By 5.30pm, as dusk began to fall, several thousand gulls had settled on the reservoir, it was quite a spectacular sight.
We saw a peregrine falcon circulating expectedly overhead. At dawn the gulls fly back to their daytime areas. So, when you look up in the skies in the evening, you now know where they are going.
