Opera Appreciation

Leader: - Gary Harding

Please note the Opera Appreciation Group will now meet on the third Thursday in the month.

The Opera Appreciation Group still flourishes and we manage to see a DVD screening of a whole opera most months. When the opera is 3 hours or more long we split it over 2 months, seeing 2/3 one month and then the remaining 1/3 along with a short opera the following month. We are working our way through the fifty most loved operas. Unfortunately the group is still full and will be for the foreseeable future.

During the last year we have watched different operas every month, some well known and some not so well known. We are gradually working through a list of the group member's favourite performances. We decided to watch the whole opera at each meeting, which only leaves time for cake and biscuits in between.

However as a study group, I am assured that we are all becoming more knowledgeable with each production and certainly living up to out title of “Appreciating Opera". We currently have our maximum number of 16 members squeezed into my sitting room, and a waiting list of 2. On the right is a photograph of some of the members at our November 2017 meeting.
