LEARN, LAUGH, LIVE
Prudhoe u3a has a number of thriving interest groups which meet regularly, either once or twice monthly. All these groups are created by volunteers who have an interest that they wish to share with others. A Convenor helps to organise each group and set up meetings and activities, but the principle is “shared learning,” in which everyone contributes what they can and the group learns together, rather than one expert teaching the rest. Most of the groups are free, though a few make a small charge if they have to cover room hire or the cost of transport or materials.
Most groups had to change their arrangements for meetings during the Covid period, and some still find it convenient to meet on Zoom, whilst others met in gardens over the summer. Most are now back to meeting indoors, with appropriate precautions.
This is the contact point if you are interested in joining a particular group, or would like to know its current meeting arrangements, or might want to attend a taster session to see if it’s for you. Contact details can be found by clicking on a coloured highlighted name of the group in the table below. This will lead you to a page with more details and a dove icon in the right top corner. Click on the bird and an email box will open ready for you to fill in.
If you find that the group you were interested in is full, don’t despair! Please inform the Groups’ Coordinator and she will investigate what can be done. There may be a waiting list you could join, or it could be possible to start a second group on the same subject.
You can also contact the Groups’ Coordinator for general information, or if you have an idea for a group that isn’t on our list, or better still, would like to offer to organise one! Thanks to the “shared learning” principle, this need not be onerous, and plenty of guidance is available.
Yet another possibility is that one of our neighbouring u3as may have the group you are looking for; we share groups, in that members of any of our u3as may join a group of one of the others provided there is space. You wouldn’t have to pay the membership fee of the other u3a. In particular, several of our members have joined groups of Tynedale u3a, based in Hexham. For a list of Tynedale’s groups, visit u3asites.org.uk/tynedale, or click here Tynedale
Our other local u3as are Whickham, Dunston, Gateshead and Derwent Valley.
Bridge for Fun
This is a new group which meets weekly at members’ houses on Friday mornings. Bridge is taught and played in a friendly, social atmosphere. No prior knowledge is required. You do not need a partner as we play with different people each week. All equipment is supplied. For further information and encouragement please contact JOHN HARRISON through this link Bridge
Another new Group!
A Men’s group is a new group which started in October. Have a look at Les’ description in the Group table below. Give him an email if you’re interested or have questions Men’s group
If anyone has any other ideas for other new interest groups, please contact our Groups’ Coordinator
