Fulwood Bowling Club
75 Victoria Road, Fulwood, Preston PR2 8NH
(tel: opening times only 01772 717685)
The Club originated in 1872 when a group of men leased the land and built the hall and pavilion. It was established as a social club for Gentlemen where they could play bowls, billiards or cards and take a drink in the exclusive company of fellow members – no Ladies allowed in those days.
It remained a privately owned club for twenty years, during which time it became closely associated with another club – also in its formative years – Preston North End.
The Link was a man called Walter Pomfret, who was both a founder member of the Bowling Club and a player in the earliest North End team. It was he who made the important decision to move to the Deepdale Ground but the players retained the bowling club as their meeting place.
In 1894 the members of the Bowling Club took over the lease on the land and elected Walter Pomfret as their first President. The Secretary at the time was Harry S. Cartmel, also one of North End’s first players. The membership continued to grow and in 1900 a limited Company was formed in order to purchase the land and premises. Fulwood Club was born.
The Club itself is run by the members for the members and most of the “house” duties are carried out by teams of volunteers, overseen and monitored by an elected Chairman and Management Committee.
Bowling - Our Green is acknowledged to be one of the finest in the area and much effort -and cost - is invested into keeping it that way. Currently we have 10 teams playing in various Divisions of Local Leagues during March to September, with members travelling to lovely areas such as Chipping, Longridge, Catforth, Woodplumpton, Scorton, Forton, Wrea Green – to mention just a few. The Green is accessible to members anytime 7 days a week all year round (subject to Competitions and league matches during the Summer season)
Come and Try – not only is the Green a delight to play on it is also a pleasure to be around on a lovely Summer day or evening. Visitors and non-members are always welcome to sit and watch. Anyone interested in taking up Bowling but worried about their skill level is encouraged to try. Tuition and guidance is freely available. Light hearted social “Roll-ups” are held frequently – and one of our evening teams has been specifically set up to cater for new members.
Snooker – Since its inception Fulwood Club has always had a strong “Billiards” following. Today the Snooker room accommodates two full-size tables always maintained to the highest standard. In winter two teams compete on Wednesday evenings in the higher Divisions of Preston and District Leagues and a “Veterans” team on Wednesday afternoons. Practice is generally on Monday and Tuesday evenings – leaving plenty of opportunity for members to enjoy casual, non-competitive games.
Social Activities – These are arranged at the behest of members and can vary widely in nature; Quiz Nights are held regularly throughout the year; Informal Bingo sessions have long been a favourite throughout the winter months.
Hospitality and Private Functions – The Club is a great place to hold private meetings or small social/domestic celebrations – birthdays; anniversaries; leaving-parties. Just ask.
Lounges and Bar – The Club has two lounge areas both overlooking the Green. The larger of the two accesses our stylish Bar – well stocked with a wide range of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages of notable status and quality – with an overhead TV. The dedicated Snooker room has ample spectator seating. A small kitchen dispenses hot drinks (and buffet style food by special arrangement).
Bar prices are kept purposely low so members reap the benefit in their pocket should they spend an evening in the Club or bring friends along for a chat.
Wi-Fi access is available to members and visitors.
Weekly access to the Clubhouse for Snooker, Cards, Social purposes is obtained through designated keyholders.
