Latin

Latin with fun for up to 10 or 20 members

Members of our U3A are invited to join this group which is run by Crouch End and District U3A.

The level of Latin will depend on the group’s composition. We are assuming you will be rusty – ferruginea – or a beginner. But we can cope with more advanced Latinists. The aim is to learn through fun. As well as reading, there can be games, plays, Bingo in Latin, and songs – Carmina Burana anyone? We can follow adult courses, but there’s nothing wrong with ones for younger children. There’s a story based on a real family who lived on our very own Roman Wall, at Vindolanda, with Flavius, the fort commander, his wife Lepidina, their three children, assorted household slaves, their cat Vibrissa, and Minimus the mouse. You can impress your grandchildren – or your cats. Do not despair (nil desperandum) if frivolity is not to your liking. There are also, of course, methods geared to adults. The group will work as its members want; and it may be possible to divide the group into different levels of ability and interest.

We will work at around rusty O-level, with beginners welcome provided they have some knowledge of other foreign European languages. Joiners need to spend about £5 on second-hand books, which can be obtained (amongst other places) from the Hellenic Book Service in Kentish Town:

Catullus – Cambridge Latin Texts by R.O.A.M Lyne £2.50
Latin passages for translation and comprehension, Cambridge Latin Texts by C.M. Dale, £3.00
Recommended is also ‘Disce Latinum Latin Grammar’ – £5 new.

We will alternate between these two while we get to know each other and see how things develop. Then we will decide what to do next. The convener will bring a big Latin dictionary to each meeting. We can also use Google translate!

It is a co-operative group effort to learn and enjoy Latin and peep into an ancient mind-set. No tests, exams, failures or feeling stupid.
