Wordsmiths
About the group:-
We meet on the 3rd Wednesday each month in Upavon. We take a subject and look into the words associated with it and their derivation and use. We take our language seriously but not ourselves, with lots of derailed trains of thought.
We’ve just had a meeting at which we discussed expressions deriving from meat and fish. Food for thought or a bit of a red herring, do you think? We had a whale of a time, nobody had a beef with anyone else or got in a stew, and we reminisced about kipper ties and mullet hairstyles. We then had a brief digression into Underwear. How come Americans can walk down the street in a vest and pants while we’d get some very funny looks if we did the same? (Answer: they’re wearing a waistcoat and trousers while we’re wearing, well, our M&S finest.)
Next time, we’re talking about words and expressions associated with bodily adornment – from tattoos to make-up, hairstyles, jewellery and anything else with which we decorate ourselves. Ritual, vanity or other.
If this appeals, come along and take part in one of our very irreverent meetings, full of derailed trains of thought, and see if you like us. We meet in Upavon on the third Wednesday of the month. Please note: friendly dog(s) in attendance.
