Outings
Wed May 29th VISIT TO SS GREAT BRITAIN, BRISTOL, ON WEDNESDAY 29TH MAY 2019 with PEWSEY VALE HISTORY OF TRANSPORT GROUP

Following our enjoyable visit to Aerospace Filton last May, the History of Transport Group is now organising an outing to the SS Great Britain in Bristol on Wednesday 29th May.

This remarkable vessel, designed and built, in iron, by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was launched in 1843, with steam engine and sails, and set out in 1845 taking hundreds of immigrants and gold-seekers to Australia.  She had a very active career until beached and ignored on the Falkland Islands until 1970 when enterprise and determination brought her home to Bristol, where she now is beautifully restored in dry dock.

We have the opportunity to have a guided tour of her lasting about 45 minutes, as well as time to explore individually, there is the Dockyard Museum of course and an exhibition “Being Brunel” covering the engineer and his achievements - the visit is expected to last about 4-5 hours.  There is a restaurant on site for coffee and lunch. The coach will leave the Bouverie Hall Car Park at 9.00am on Wednesday 29th May returning there about 18.15pm.  The total cost of the visit, including the entry cost and guided tour will be £24 per person, which must be paid in advance either by sending a cheque to Sue Greatorex at 10 Farriers Field, Upavon, Pewsey, SN9 6NW, made payable to Pewsey Vale U3A, or bank transfer. Please contact Transport History Group Leader - Sue Greatorex for deatils.

If you would like to go on this visit to a unique part of our maritime history, please let Sue Greatorex know, either by calling on 01980-630084 or send a message to Transport History Group Leader - Sue Greatorex

There has already been plenty of interest in the visit, so let Sue know as soon as possible if you would like to join the group
