Wine Appreciation is a group for people who simply enjoy wine.
The Group celebrated entering its fourth year in the same place where it held its very first official meeting ie in The Petersfield Community Centre. Before this, a small group of us had met around a table at The Town House to discuss the idea of forming a wine group as Petersfield u3a didn’t have one. I had run such a Group in Somerset prior to moving back to the Petersfield area. Over a second cup of tea, the general consensus seemed pretty favourable and we decided to ‘give it a go’ on the basis that it would primarily be a social gathering with a glass or two of wine up for discussion.
The Group quickly expanded and includes some very knowledgeable ‘imbibers’ to those who just enjoy a glass of wine. However, when trying different wines from all over the world, red, white or rose, inevitably we do learn quite a bit of what goes into producing a good wine. We have had two trips out to vineyards, the first was to Denbies, Nr Dorking which was an amazing experience and last year we went locally to Hambledon. Again, the talk and tour we had were really interesting and we followed this with a picnic on the vine ridge in lovely sunshine. I do add, that on both occasions we had a mini-bus to take care of the drink-driving issue!
We meet to taste wines based on a theme and accompanied by cheese and biscuits, good conversation and friendship. We bring a bottle of wine per couple relating to the theme for each meeting for everyone to taste, discuss and score. Our first meeting had a theme of wines from Slovenia, Hungary or Romania.
