Antiques and Collectables
This group consists of members who all have different experiences of collecting. It has proved great fun and so successful that we now meet at the Square Brewery Pub in the Square, Petersfield with each meeting led by a different Chairman. We meet every first Thursday of the month.
Each member brings an item of interest and these have varied hugely from antique car motor horns, to snuff boxes and china.
If anyone is interested in coming along to join us then please call John on 01730 233877 or send a message.
John Wandless - Convenor
In a change from its usual meeting at The Square Brewery, the Antiques & Collectables group had an "Away Day" for its April, 2019 meeting.
We ventured to The Hospital of St. Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty in Winchester. There we were met by one of the residents, Brother John, who gave us a conducted tour. We were lucky that the weather was dry and sunny if a little cool so that we could enjoy the well kept gardens and the much modified ancient buildings.
The Hospital was founded by a grandson of William the Conqueror in 1132. Not only did it provide accommodation for 13 poor men, it also provided sustenance for the local poor and for travellers. Indeed, the tradition continues, and a piece of bread and cup of beer will still be provided on request. Brother John gave us a fascinating insight into the daily lives of the brothers and brought the buildings to life with his account of the various uses of the beautiful buildings.
At the end of the visit, the group withdrew to a nearby pub for a well-deserved lunch.
