The group meets once a month on the third Tuesday morning of every month in members’ houses 10.30 – 12.00.
The aim of the group is to provide an opportunity for members to learn more about art – its history, its development and its future and to appreciate its various formats.
The meetings usually involve learning about and discussing specific topics, periods or individual artists using a wide range of resources. Currently, in the way of background, the history of art is being explored through a half hour illustrated talk on DVD. This is followed by a member led session reviewing, critiquing and further exploring a topic or artist selected by the group. There are a host of resources available to support our work especially those provided through the internet whether on YouTube or the free resources put out by museums and art galleries from across the world. Libraries provide a very useful support too. The quality of reproduction and the focus that can be given to the art using HD materials on a good sized screen is quite outstanding.
There are currently 10 members non of whom are art ‘experts’ just interested in art and wanting to know more. With ten or so sessions per year on average individual members only have to take responsibility for finding the resources for any one session although even then other members also often choose to look for materials to support the discussions.
On occasions there may be opportunities to go on visits to galleries and exhibitions.
Members are expected to commit to helping to undertake research and identify resources and help can always be provided for this self directing group.
