2019-03a Ben Tirran Walk (1)

Ben Tirran (Corbett) by Loch Brandy and Loch Wharral, Glen Clova

Start Point 228 m (748 feet), Highest Point 893m (2930 feet), Distance 16.2 km (10.07 miles), Total Ascent 817 m (2681 feet), Time taken 5hrs 38m

Five members set out from Glen Clova Hotel on a beautiful winters morning with clear blue skies and sunshine. Height was gained quickly giving stunning views of the snowy mountains and rocky slopes on both sides of the glen. A coffee stop was enjoyed at Loch Brandy while we listened to the ‘creaking and cracking’ of the frozen ice on the loch. In view of the icy conditions it was decided to avoid the Snub and ascend the Broom Shank to Green Hill which also gave dramatic views of the Loch below the broken cliffs of the Craigs of Loch Brandy. From here we followed the plateau towards the trig point on the Goet - the summit of Ben Tirran. An otherwise featureless plateau was made special by the natural ice art on the fences and snow surface and the ‘squeaking’ of boots in the snow. The descent to Loch Wharral was rewarded by more great views and the presence of a mountain hare still in his winter attire. Lunch was taken in the Estates Bothy on the edge of the loch before the final descent to the road and return to the Clova Hotel for coffee. A spectacular winter walk enjoyed by all.
