The Group enjoyed two Summer Outings in 2018 – along the Auchmithie Trail in Angus and, with a guide, around Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh. The session just ended concluded the two-year syllabus which had been agreed in September 2017, leaving us all rather better informed about the science of Geology than previously.
During the session one outing was undertaken – studying the building stones of Perth, which concluded inside one of the studied buildings, which happens to be a café/restaurant, prior to Christmas. One of the weeks was taken entirely by one member, which proved informative, amusing and terrifying depending on where you might be in Scotland geologically !
The Syllabus for 2019-20 has been agreed to comprise members presenting their take on the Geology of their choice of a part of Scotland – already Skye, the Borders and Shetland have been mentioned. The Summer Outings will be to Dura Den and St Andrews in Fife.
Once again the headquarters of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society has proved to be an excellent venue, being the right size, with the right facilities, and ready access to the RSGS comprehensive collection of Geology maps and especially having the right ethos for a group of diligent learners.
