This group is currently inactive due to coronavirus restrictions.
The 2019-20 session started with 57 members and averaged an attendance of 22 at the 6 meetings completed before coronavirus forced the cancellation of our March and April meetings.
Our first meeting in September was a talk on ‘Waste Awareness’ by a member of Perth and Kinross Council staff. It was a very interesting look into the world of refuse and the various purposes that our waste is put to, such as creating gas. A volunteer puppy trainer from Guide Dogs for the Blind was our next speaker and explained his role and also the intensive training that each dog goes through before becoming a guide dog. The puppy that accompanied the speaker was very well behaved throughout! A member of staff from Taymara, the maritime charity, was our next speaker and gave an interesting talk on their work with various groups – from those with health problems to prisoners gaining qualifications. Our final meeting of 2019 was addressed by a speaker from Macmillan Move More who gave everyone food for thought regarding how we exercise, with various leaflets and contact addresses given out.
Our first meeting of 2020 gave us an insight onto the world of a prison chaplain in both his pastoral duties and in how he supports prisoners and staff through their personal problems. Our final speaker was the Clerk of the Course at Perth Racecourse who gave us an in-depth look behind the scenes, his interesting talk aided by photographs.
