The game of Mah-Jong is thought to have originated in China in about 1850 and to have developed from existing card and domino games. It has been played in the West since the 1920's, when it was extremely popular, and it is currently enjoying a revivial of interest today.
The basic game is for four people and is learnt very easily as it is closley allied with many card games. It is played with a set of 144 tiles. Mah-Jong sets can be made of bone, bamboo or plastic and are very beautifully decorated.
The Pershore and District U3A Mah-Jong group has been in existence for about fifteen years and we welcome members with or without experience of playing. Group members help each other to learn the game and there are many interesting extensions to the basic game which can be played by those who want to progress further.
We follow the rules of the British Mah-Jong Association.
