In September, Covid permitting, we are planning to resume planning one or two study days for the coming year. This is a fairly recent addition to activities offered throughout our u3a year and prior to Covid, three Study Days had taken place, so far we have:-
• Joined professional Shakespeare RSC actor Joe Arkley and looked at some of Shakespeare’s plays both in text and performance. This was a great opportunity to try something new, to look in depth at some well known speeches from our most famous playwright and even participate in some acting!
• Welcomed Roy Stratford, a musician of wide sympathies and interests and a lecturer in music at Wigmore Hall and West Dean College. He took us through Bach’s Goldberg Variations and how they still influenced popular music today. In the afternoon, the icing on the cake was a Roy’s full recital of the work.
• Science, Faith, Fantasy was the title of the day lead by Dr Jonathan Conlin, Senior lecturer in Modern History at Southampton University. An expert on Charles Kingsley, we explored with Jon, how Kingsley, a friend of evolutionists Huxley and Darwin, embraced “heretical” ideas and how he made evolution the key to understanding Britain’s past and imperial future.
• For something completely different, we were to meet Henry Howarth for “Cryptic Crosswords – What’s that all about?!” then Covid struck!…………………
Keep a lookout in our newsletters and the website for what is coming next.
